Phil Mickelson won the WGC CA Championship on Sunday and by doing so moved in to second place in the World Golf Rankings. Phil bounced back from being treated for dehydration on Saturday night to hold on to a one shot lead and defeat a tenacious Nick Watney.

This is how it should be. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are once again positioned to re-ignite a rivalry that had grown dormant. Read more

Seve Faces More Chemotherapy in Battle against Brain Tumor

March 27, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Spanish golf legend Seve Ballesteros will undergo a fourth round of chemotherapy treatment, beginning on Saturday 28th March, as he continues his battle against a cancerous brain tumor.

Ballesteros said on Thursday that blood tests following his third round of treatment showed that the 51-year old could continue with chemotherapy, which follows on from four brain surgeries which the five-time major winner underwent to remove the tumor in October 2008.

In an earlier announcement, made after his second round of treatment, Ballesteros had talked of the possibility of making a public appearance but this was not mentioned, although he asserted his spirits were ‘still high’.

The ‘car park champion’ has described his battle back to health as the ‘toughest challenge of my life’, and as a player, Ballesteros was known for his swashbuckling style, which helped him achieve 5 Major wins and 100 career titles in all, as well as becoming a key member of the Ryder Cup squad throughout the 1980s and 1990s before he retired in 2007 due to chronic back problems.

Olazabal Denies Ryder Cup Role Promise

Contrary to what has been suggested earlier, it seems that Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal may not be among Colin Montgomerie’s backroom team for the 2010 Ryder Cup afterall. On Wednesday of this week, the Spaniard denied the claims made by Monty that he had promised to be the Scot’s right-hand man for the Celtic Manor showdown with the U.S if he failed to play his way into the team.

Olazabal, twice a winner of the US Masters, said he had yet to come to a final decision regarding his Ryder Cup role and that he had made his position clear to Montgomerie in a chat during the Dubai Desert Classic earlier this year.

At a Seville press conference prior to the Andalucia Open, Olazabal said:

“My words to him were that I wanted to try to make the effort to get into the team as a player and if that was not the case we would have to have (another) little chat in the next year sometime … I’m not certain about anything. That’s my position still.”

Olazabal, who is continuing his rehabilitation from rheumatism, will contest the Andalucia Open in a bid to prove his fitness ahead of a tilt at the US Masters next month fulfilled the vice-captain role under Nick Faldo at the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla, Kentucky but was coy about his prospects of a second term.

“If I made any promise then it is news to me. I’ve done it once (been vice-captain) and there’s not much to do. There aren’t enough decisions to make, so that’s why I’m not sure,” he said.

Annika Sorenstam to Become a Mother

She may have stepped out of the competitive golf spotlight, but Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam is still making headlines, as she announced via her blog that she is pregnant with her and husband, Mike McGee’s first child. The child is due in the autumn.

“We have had a lot of exciting changes in the past few months, and adding a new addition to our family later this fall will certainly be at the top of that list,” Sorenstam said. “We are absolutely thrilled and look forward to this new chapter of our lives.”

Annika is one of the most successful female golfers of all time and retired from the LPGA tour in 2008 after recording a haul of 72 PGA victories and 10 major championships – she has won 89 individual titles worldwide and retired after competing in the Dubai Ladies Masters. She is the only women’s player to have broken the magical 60 barrier in tournament play and has amassed earnings in excess of $22 million.

She married her husband, who is the son of Jerry McGee – a former PGA Tour player – in January 2009, and has so far spent her retirement designing courses and teaching golf. She also recently launched a range of perfumes.

Annika’s announcement comes soon after announcements of new arrivals for both Tiger Woods and Justin Rose and one has to wonder if Sorenstam junior will be locking horns with Woods junior and Rose junior in the future.
