Gary Player Announces Masters Finale

As the younger generation prepares to descend on Augusta for this week’s US Masters, the tournament will be the last hurrah for one member of the game’s old guard, as he prepares to bow out of competitive golf after making his Masters debut some 52 years previously.
It was that long ago that South African golfer, Gary Player, first arrived at Augusta’s azalea-lined fairways with less than $5000 to his name. However, what Player lacked in funds, he more than made up for in confidence and none of the game’s big guns at the time fazed the jovial South African.
Player, who won the coveted Green Jacket three times – first in 1961 and again in 1974 and 1978 – has teed off at Augusta alongside some of the games’ great names, and has watched over the rise to prominence of Tiger Woods, as well as some precocious young talent who were merely twinkles in their parents’ eyes the last time Player slipped on the last of his green jackets.
Last year, Player featured in his 51st Masters which gave him the record for the most appearances at Augusta and broke a tie he shared with Arnold Palmer. However, in his last 21 appearances, the ‘man in black’ has managed to make the cut on only four occasions and has missed out at the half-way stage in his last ten successive appearances.
Player, however, has no regrets about his decision to step aside and is aware no-one lasts forever in any sport. A keen fitness fan, Player has long since extolled the virtue of keeping oneself in shape if they are to compete at the highest level, but at 73 years old, Player himself admits it is harder to build and maintain the strength required to continue playing.
“I’m exercising profusely, but it’s very difficult at 73 to build strength,” Player said. “The golf course is so long. It is just so long. I mean, I’m hitting a wood to almost every single hole.”
“There’s a great saying that the Chinese have. They say, ‘Everything shall pass.’ And that’s what we have got to realize,” Player said. “There’s nothing worse than you see these boxers and athletes saying they are retiring and they come back and they get their knees knocked in and they end up punch-drunk.
“I’ve had such a wonderful career. My goodness, when I think of the career I’ve had. You can’t have it all, and I did have it all. I’ve had it all. You can’t be greedy.”
In all, Player won a total of 9 Major titles; 3 Open Championships, two PGA Championships and one US Open Championship to add to his Augusta haul, and is one of a handful of players to have completed golf’s ‘Grand Slam’. In all, he has won a total of 163 tournaments worldwide as a professional and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.
Lisa looks forward to the US Masters
With the Masters just days away I couldn’t be more excited! 2009 will be my second trip to Augusta and I’m sure that this year’s tournament looks like being one of the closest in recent history. With the likes of Ogilvy, Mickelson and Woods all vying for that top spot, you would think that they’ll be the only ones competing for golf’s most famous jacket. Thankfully the wealth of British talent on show will hopefully ensure some home grown interest on Sunday evening. Read more
