From the world of golf stars such as Ian Poulter, Christie O’Connor Jnr, Oli Fisher and Andrew Coltart have all added their support to the challenge

“Help the Heroes is a hugely worthy charity and a charity close to my heart. I have displayed the website on my tour bag this season in an attempt to raise awareness of the cause. The National Golf Club Challenge is a great initiative to raise money for our injured soldiers. With the backing of Sky Sports and other great partners I am certain the event will be a great success.”
Ian Poulter’s passion for golf is legendary, often showing his love for his country through his unique dress on and off the golf course. Ian goes on to say: “I am so proud of our troops, their commitment and dedication is something that needs recognition. As a sportsman I can only imagine how difficult it is to deal with the debilitating injuries, both mentally and physically.
Help for Heroes provides an incredible support for these tough and inspiring people and I am proud that British golf clubs and golfers are giving their full support. I hope the National Golf Club Challenge raises a huge amount of money and that men and women all over the country have fun participating”
Golf legend Christie o Connor Jnr took time out to add “Help for Heroes is a wonderful way to support the men and women who risk their lives every day in order to make the world a better place, by participating in The National Golf Club Challenge you can help give a better quality of life to those who have been injured in the line of duty. In association with Glenbrae Golf I am delighted to support this very worthy cause and I would encourage you to please play your part.”
Scottish Golfer Andrew Coltart who is managed by ISM says: “To all you heroes, I would just like to say a massive thank you to all of you, men & woman (& your Families) for doing the things you do! I play golf around the world in a safe environment and go home to my family at the end of each tournament, so I cannot comprehend the sacrifices you make for our country on a daily basis. The National Golf Club Challenge in support of Help for Heroes is a great way to show our appreciation to our troops through our love of golf.”
From the world of television the likes of Gary Lineker, Jodie Kidd and Chris Hollins have all wanted to lend their support to the challenge
Gary comments: “The National Golf Club Challenge is all about bringing the entire golfing community of the UK together on one day to show our support to our wounded service heroes whose selfless acts are an inspiration to us all. We may not be able to stop our service personnel from getting injured, but we can try to make sure they receive all they need when they arrive back from active duty. Our passion for golf can make a massive difference to the lives of our injured heroes, please be a part of it.”
Nobody will ever forget those long Wimbledon nights watching Tim Henman in his epic battles that left the nation on the edge of its seats. Now Tim has retired from professional Tennis he has become a keen golfer and is happy to support the challenge. Tim says: “The courage and commitment of our troops on the front line are an inspiration to us all; they risk their own lives so we might lead better ones and in doing so ask for very little in return often quoting they are just doing their job.
Help for Heroes is a wonderful initiative which provides vital support to our injured soldiers and The National Golf Club Challenge is a meaningful way for us as golfers to show our appreciation to the men and women who have received horrific injuries whilst serving our country. Please do all you can to make the challenge a great success.”

GB & Ire double Vivendi Trophy lead
September 25, 2009 by Brian · Leave a Comment
They were supposed to be strong underdogs, but it seems no-one told Paul McGinley’s Great Britain and Ireland Vivendi Cup team of their role and they are now threatening to rip up the script after the second day’s play.
The first day’s play saw Great Britain and Ireland take a slender 3-2 lead into day two after the opening fourballs despite the absence of big guns Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter.
First blood on the opening day went the way of McGinley’s men and it was rookies Anthony Wall and Chris Wood who comprehensively beat the strong pair of Henrik Stenson – fifth in the world – and compatriot Robert Karlsson with a 6 and 5 margin. Next, Northern Irish pair Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy doubled the lead with a 4&3 win over Soren Kjeldsen and the big-hitting Alvaro Quiroz of Spain.
Continental Europe got off the mark and narrowed the lead when Anders Hansen and Francesco Molinari beat English duo Robert Rock and Steve Webster 4&3 but Simon Dyson and Oliver Wilson restored the lead, winning 3&2 against Soren Hansen and Peter Hanson.
The final match saw Spanish duo Miguel-Angel Jiminez and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano win 2&1 over Ross Fisher and Nick Dougherty to leave only one point between the teams.
However, the second day has seen McGinley’s team hit the ground running and they will take a 2-point lead into day three’s foursomes and greensomes after winning three of Friday’s fourballs to take a 6-4 lead.
Anthony Wall and Chris Wood have continued their fine partnership by beating Miguel-Angel Jiminez and Soren Kjeldsen 3&2 while Simon Dyson and Oliver Wilson also maintained their 100% partnership with a 2&1 victory over Stenson and Quiros. Nick Dougherty and Ross Fisher scored their first point with a 3&2 win over Peter Hanson and Soren Hansen, while Continental Europe’s winning points came from Anders Hansen and Francesco Molinari, who defeated McDowell and McIlroy 3&1, and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and partner Robert Karlsson who defeated Robert Rock and Steve Webster on the final hole.
Great Britain and Ireland are seeking a fifth straight win in the competition which is the brainchild of Spanish golf legend Seve Ballesteros, who gave his name to the trophy before it was changed to the Vivendi trophy earlier this year.
