Westwood collects another award!

December 15, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Lee Westwood’s season continues to go from strength to strength and the awards keep coming for the Worksop golfer as he wraps up his 2009 exploits.

Westwood has enjoyed a fantastic season, culminating in being crowned European Tour Golfer of the Year for the third time and topping the Race to Dubai rankings. Now, he can also add the Golf Writers’ Trophy to his haul of awards, beating off competition from Catriona Matthew and Rory McIlroy; joining Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros as the only three-time winner of the award.

It is the third time Westwood has won the award, having previously done so in 1998 and 2000 and he topped the annual poll ahead of Scotland’s Solheim Cup player, Catriona Matthew who won the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes, just eleven weeks after giving birth to her second daughter, Sophie; and McIlroy, who enjoyed a successful season which saw him reach the world’s top ten.

Westwood will receive the trophy at the Association’s annual dinner prior to the Open Championship at St Andrews in July.

‘I am delighted to receive the award once again. It is a particular honour to have been chosen for the third time and to become one of only two players, alongside Seve, to have won it three times. That means an awful lot to me, especially when I consider the great players we have had on the European Tour.’

Westwood will now turn his attention to capturing a maiden major title after narrowly missing out on the Open Championship at Turnberry in July, and a Ryder Cup appearance against the United States at The Celtic Manor, Wales.

Allenby wins again in Australia

Robert Allenby continued his fine recent spell of form with victory in the Australian PGA Championship to record back-to-back successes, after the player also won the Nedbank Challenge at Sun City, South Africa last weekend.

It was the fourth time Allenby had won the PGA and he did so following a five-under par round of 66 for a 14-under par total of 270 at the Hyatt Regency course in Queensland. He had previously won the title in 2000, 2001 and 2005. Allenby only played in the tournament after the sponsors approached him following the withdrawal from the field of Fijian player Vijay Singh.

As he has done all this year, Allenby went into his final round wearing a pink shirt, in memory of his mother Sylvia who died last year of cancer and Allenby dedicated his win to her.

Allenby played a near-faultless final round on his way to a four-stroke victory. He had started the day only one stroke in front but two birdies on the front nine and a further three on the back nine saw Allenby cruise home ahead of fellow Australians Scott Strange and John Senden.

“It’s a nice feeling to win in that fashion,” said Allenby. “It’s always nice to come down the last with a four-shot lead. I was pretty consistent but to do it under the gun in the final round, that’s pretty special.”

Geoff Ogilvy, the defending champion, faded badly on the final day to tie for seventh place while Adam Scott, who had returned to winning ways with victory in the previous week’s Australian Open was unable to mount a challenge and finally finished in a share of 12th place.

Westwood Sizzles in the Desert

December 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The shootout that the European Tour hoped would happen at The Dubai World Championship never really materialized, thanks to Lee Westwood. Sitting at number two in the European Tour Money list, Westwood wasted no time in pulling away from the field when he birdied two of the first three holes. Ross McGowan who started two strokes back of Westwood could not keep up Westwood’s sizzling pace as he birdied five of the first seven holes on his way to an opening front side 31. Read more
