The Belfry Golf Resort Review

The BelfryI’ve been very lucky in my golfing career but have to say my favourite ultimate golf break was playing at the Belfry just prior to the 2002 Ryder Cup. With the Brabazon Course due to close literally days before our trip the course couldn’t have been in better condition. Although the Belfry may have played host to many great golfing spectacles over the years, I doubt very much it was ready for my level of golf! Thankfully I found solice in seeing Yellow tees out for play, I didn’t fancy playing from the Ryder Cup tees!

We arrived on the Friday evening via a long trip up the M40 looking forward to a meal and a few drinks to set us up for the next day. The accommodation was excellent, as was the meal and we all went to bed with an eye on the weather, which was very windy as the time. We knew that the wind would need to be right if anyone was to have a go at the green on the 10th tee…ala Ballesteros!

After an early breakfast, we warmed up…with coffee; lots of coffee (maybe earlier to bed would have been a better idea).  From there we were directed to the first tee and hey presto I hooked my first shot into the rough…but holed out for a 5!  From there it was nip & tuck with my playing partner and I keeping our opponents in check.  On getting to the 10th we were 2 down, and with this in mind we decided that I would go for it as I had the longer game…no pressure then! The highlight of the weekend was to see that ball hit the green in one, although it did go straight through the green! My partner secured the 4 so it was up to me, with a birdie putt of 4 foot or so. An uphill putt beckoned so I hit harder than normal knowing that I didn’t want to die wondering!  Success! Off to the next tee with a 3! My playing partner just nodded…there really is no pleasing some people!
