Vilamoura Golf Holiday Review

Algarve GolfAlthough there are many destinations that could lay claim to being the ultimate, I would have to say that you simply won’t find better than an Algarve golf holiday. From the pleasant weather to the manicured fairways everything is perfect accept the golf although sometimes that can be hot too!

Each time I’ve travelled to the Algarve, the feeling you get when you are walking off the plane and through the terminal is one of utter relief to be leaving a generally wet and wintry UK and be greeted by perfectly manicured golf courses and a very amiable climate – plus the Superbock beer isn’t too bad either!

Old Course VilamouraMy last trip to Portugal was back in April of this year where I had the chance to play Vila Sol, Pinhal and the Old Course. Staying in Vilamoura marina itself allows the opportunity to not to have to worry about hiring a car, as all the amenities are in the marina. With many courses located close to the marina they operate a free shuttle service to and from the course allowing for the opportunity to relax and take it easy.

The marina itself offers many restaurants and pubs from the loud karaoke bars to the more sedate Italian eateries off the main drag. There is something for everyone!

The first round took in Vila Sol – a lovely 27 hole course only 5 minutes from Vilamoura. A parkland course with strategically placed trees just off the fairways, to catch the slightly errant drive. Good tees and fast greens make for an enjoyable round with the only drawback the constant reminder from the starter to keep pace with the group in front. Slightly disconcerting when you are taking your golf seriously and trying not to worry about the clock!

Next up was Pinhal – a slight mishmash of a course which has the feel of 2 nine hole courses stuck together. Apparently when the course originally opened it was just 9 and this was extended some years later. The parkland course winds its way through many villas located to the sides of the fairways which tend to gobble up any loose shots. Again, decent tees and greens although the fairways were rather sparse, lacking the spongy grass you come to expect from a course in the Algarve.

Finally, the favourite of many including mine – the Old Course, Vilamoura. A well-established course set in the gentle slopes of the surrounding area nearby to the marina. A really well-designed course that tests the golfer and rewards him/her with the good shots but punishes him/her with the bad ones! Favourite hole on the course has to be the testing par 3, 8th – 200 yards downhill with trouble on both sides, not a shot for the faint-hearted. In excellent condition with the greens playing at a nice speed – the relaxed atmosphere allows for one to take their time going round this wonderful course and savouring every moment. When you go to the Algarve, the Old Course is one you must experience.

The next trip back to the Algarve is already planned for 2010 with Victoria, Quinta da Lago and the favourite Old Course in our sights. I can’t wait!
