For those who have watched The Masters over the years, you will be familiar with the roar that the trees at Augusta National create. The natural amphitheatre created by the mature pines (the majority being Loblolly, Longleaf & Eastern White for the horticulturalists amongst us) make the tournament a great spectacle for any patrons lucky enough to enter into the hallowed gates of Augusta National. From numerous points around the course pockets of noise reverberate from the pines to Read more

Bohn supremacy as Jason wins Zurich Classic

April 26, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Jason Bohn finished with three birdies in his final four holes to secure the second PGA Tour victory of his career in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Bohn’s closing round of 67 gave the player a two shot victory over compatriot Jeff Overton as he completed a wire-to-wire success in the event, played over TPC Louisiana.

Bohn’s only previous win came in the 2005 B.C Open and his win in New Orleans – which saw him collect $1,152,000 – represented the perfect birthday present, as the player celebrated his 37th birthday on Saturday.

Heavy rain and lightning Friday and again on Saturday morning caused severe delays for the early rounds, and Bohn was forced to play 24 holes on Saturday and a further 30 holes on Sunday.

Bohn saw off a strong challenge from Overton, who had overhauled Bohn’s two shot lead by the time the duo were standing on the 15th tee. Bohn established a one-shot lead at the 16th thanks to another birdie, but Overton’s chance seemingly went with a pulled put on the 17th hole to drop two behind. From there, Bohn played out the last in relative security, and taking no chances laid up short of the long closing hole, before firing his 150-yard third shot to an inch of the hole.

Throughout the tournament, Bohn displayed why he is ranked number one on the PGA Tour in approaches from around 200 yards as time and again he attacked the flag with his iron play , and as the final birdie dropped, a tearful Bohn celebrated.

“I’m probably the only guy on the PGA Tour who has got tears when he’s putting out on 18,” said Bohn.

Troy merit finished third following a closing five-under par round of 67, while two time US Open champion Lee Jantzen rolled back the clock to finish in fourth place.

It was a disappointing weekend for our tipster’s trio as each struggled to make any impression on the leaderboard in the final two days after starting the event strongly. David Toms finished best of the three on six-under.

Fraser wins Ballantine’s Championship

Australia’s Marcus Fraser recorded the biggest win of his career as he captured the weather-shortened £2million Ballantine’s Championship at Pinx Golf Club on the South Korean island of Jeju.

Fraser’s closing round of 69 was enough to give the player a comfortable four shot lead over the chasing pack in the event, which was shortened to 54 holes from 72 holes after dense fog wiped out much of the opening day’s play.

Fraser became the first wire-to-wire victor this season on the European Tour and he saw off the likes of Gareth Maybin of Northern Ireland and fellow Australian Brett Rumford, who were joint second while home player Noh Seung-Yul and England’s Oliver Fisher finished in a tie for fourth place.

Fraser’s victory at the event, which was co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour, European Tour and the Korea PGA, ended the player’s seven-year title drought and he was visibly emotional afterwards as he collected his winner’s cheque.

“I had so many chances to win over the last seven years so to go out there and play like how I did today and this week was simply unbelievable,” said Fraser

Fraser’s only previous win came in the 2003 Russian Championship and at one point the player had thought about quitting the game as he struggled for form.

“I thought about giving it away, just because I was playing terrible,” he said.

“My swing wasn’t improving and everything wasn’t really getting any better. I thought I was wasting my time and started to question myself and asking whether I deserved to be out.

“It has been a lot of hard work over the last couple of years to get back into this position this week, which is definitely a life-changing one.”

Fraser had faced a potential stern challenge from world number seven, Ernie Els, who closed to within one shot of the lead during the final round but Els dropped three strokes over the final two holes and as Fraser found his range and the birdies he needed, Els lost further ground to eventually tie for ninth place alongside defending champion, Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee and Sweden’s Niclas Fasth, Finland’s Mikko Ilonen and Argentina’s Tano Goya.

After strong opening rounds, none of our tipster’s trio could get close to the lead with United States’ Anthony Kim faring best, finishing with a round of 71 and a 213 total.
