Hawkstone Park Review
A quick look on the yourgolftravel website found our next golf breaks destination in Shropshire’s Hawkstone Park. Driving through the village on the approach to Hawkstone Park, you can tell that you are in a nice part of the world, and as soon as you catch a glimpse of the famous clubhouse, you just want to get out there.
We arrived at the Golf Club in time for lunch and after generous helpings of ham, egg and chips and a pint of Guinness, it was time to play some golf. Having been told about the 6 hole par 3 Academy Course, we decided that was a good option for a warm up, providing a slight feel of Augusta with it.
We played The Championship Course (formerly The Windmill Course) on the first day. Slightly longer than The Hawkstone, and fairly American in style, the course has humpy fairways and undulating greens, not mentioning plenty of water to await any slightly wayward drives.
The Championship provided a very pleasurable experience, and the views of the surrounding countryside and towards Wales were superb. Food in the restaurant was plentiful and delicious, and the staff very attentive to make sure you enjoy your stay.
Hawkstone Park has much more of a feel of a golf club, providing basic but very comfortable rooms, tea and coffee making facilities and plenty of hot water for a soothing bath! If the competition on the golf course isn’t enough for you, grab the Games Room keys from reception and enjoy a couple of frames of snooker or a game of darts to round off the evening.
The next day, after our buffet breakfast, it was time to take on the club’s centrepiece, The Hawkstone Course. The course didn’t disappoint, despite a pretty strong wind making the last 6 holes an even bigger test than usual. The holes around the turn were excellent, and the two signature holes, 10 and 12, fantastic. The unique landscape which frames these holes provides a breathtaking and memorable experience.
Walking up the 18th towards the clubhouse, we felt very rewarded that we had played such a great course, and you wouldn’t get bored playing it again and again. It was time to leave after collecting my prize from the Pro Shop and casting an eye over the honours board celebrating the feats of esteemed members, Sandy Lyle and Michael Welch, we headed back south.
I would recommend Hawkstone Park to every standard of golfer. It is well worth the drive from the South East and it is perfectly located for visitors from pretty much all over. It offers fantastic value for money and I will most definitely be going back.
