Could this be the new Tiger Woods?

Bobby Wyatt isn’t a name you’re likely to be familiar with but the American golfer is in line for a world record after carding an amazing 14-under par round of 57 at the Country Club of Mobile, Alabama.

But what makes this score all the more remarkable is that Bobby is a teenager at just 17-years old. Wyatt is a graduate of UMS-Wright in Alabama and his score came in the second round of the 65th Boy’s State Junior Championship.

Wyatt’s round featured 12 birdies, an eagle and five pars over the par-71, 6,628-yard course and according to the Guinness Book of World Records is in line for a record as the previous lowest score in competitive play on a golf course of more than 6,500 yards was a 58. Wyatt needed 23 putts total and shot a 9-under 26 on the front nine.

Rounds require to be scored in competitive tournaments which is tough luck on Canadian Kris Wasylowich of Lethbridge, Alberta, who posted a 57 on his home course, Paradise Canyon, in May, 2006. Despite meeting the criteria for a world record in terms of the course distance – Wasylowich’s round was recorded from tees that played 6,800 yards – his 57 is not considered the world record by Guinness because it was posted in a friendly round, not during competition.

According to records, the only round achieved in a tournament which is lower than Wyatt’s was shot by American golfer Homero Blancas, who played on the PGA Tour in the 1960′s and 70′s. He shot a 55 in the 1962 Premier Invitational in Longview, Texas as an amateur and his round was 15-under-par over that course’s par 70 layout. However, that course only measured a little over 5000 yards in total and was played over the same nine holes twice.

From the professional ranks, the lowest score recorded is 58, which has been achieved three times: by University of Alabama alumni Jason Bohn in the 2001 Canadian Tour’s Tour Championship; Shigeki Maruyama in final qualifying for the 2000 US Open; and by Ryo Ishikawa earlier this year in the Crowns tournament on the Japanese Tour.
