Amateur wins EuroPro event
James Robinson became the first amateur to win on Europe’s leading satellite tour, the PGA EuroPro Tour, when he claimed the recent VEKA & Network VEKA UK Open at De Vere Slaley Hall.
Robinson, 21, (below) was only competing after being given a sponsors’ invite into the tournament. The England International finished the three-round event at 12-under par to claim a one stroke victory ahead of Jamie Abbott and James Hepworth, although Robinson’s amateur status meant he did not collect the £10,000 top prize, which was instead shared between Abbott and Hepworth.
“It’s a great honour to be the first amateur player to win on the EuroPro Tour,” said Robinson. “I’m sure there will be others that will follow in my footsteps but it’s nice to be the first. I’m thinking about turning professional and it all depends on how I do at Tour School in September so I will just wait and see.”
This was second time Slaley Hall has hosted a prestigious tour event this year, following the De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship which was held over the Hunting Course in June.
Designed by Neil Coles in 1999, the 6,951-yard Priestman Course, which hosted the EuroPro event, is furthering its reputation as a championship venue, the successful EuroPro event highlighting its ability to test some of the leading golfers in the country and showcases De Vere Slaley Hall’s two championship standard courses.
