After turning a level-stakes profit of £31 in January from our betting tips, the YourGolfTravel tipster was keen to continue the profit trend into February.
It didn’t look good for much of the month, however, and it looked likely that that £31 profit would be wiped out following a string of poor finishes by the tipster’s selections. That is until Luke Donald popped up to win the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
Week One – Commercialbank Qatar Masters, Waste Management Phoenix Open
The first week in February saw the tipster put up Lee Westwood, Robert Karlsson and Alvaro Quiros as his three against the field. Westwood was never at the races in this event, while Robert Karlsson mounted a strong challenge, but endured a torrid final day to drop out of contention. It was left to Spaniard Alvaro Quiros to mount a strong finish, eventually claiming the runners-up spot behind Thomas Bjorn, to give us an each-way return at 14/1.
There was little to shout about in the Waste Management Phoenix Open, as all three our selections – Phil Mickelson, Ryan Palmer, and Anthony Kim – each failed to perform.
Week Two – Dubai Desert Classic, AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
Rory McIlroy presented our biggest challenge of the week’s European Tour event, and was looking good at half-way, holding a two-shot lead over the field. However, McIlroy folded in the second half of the tournament to slip down the leaderboard, and out of the paying places.
Neither Martin Kaymer or Miguel Angel Jiminez got competitive in the event, which threw Alvaro Quiros – a tipster pick the previous week – as the winner.
In the A&T Pebble Beach, our hopes were pinned on dual champion Dustin Johnson, along with J.B Holmes and Tim Clark who didn’t start the event due to a late injury. Neither player got competitive in the event, in what was becoming a worrying trend for the tipster.
Week Three – Avantha Masters, Northern Trust Open
The malaise continued into week three with all three Avantha Masters picks performing below their best, although Spaniard Rafael-Cabrera Bello led the field at half-way, and still held hopes of victory after the third round. Neither Richie Ramsay or home player Gaganjeet Bhullar were ever in with a shout; the Scot even missing the cut.
Defending champion Steve Stricker, along with J.B Holmes and Brendon de Jonge capped a disappointing week for the tipster, although Holmes was in contention up to the final day but couldn’t trouble the leaders in the final round.
Week Four – WGC-Accenture Match Play, Mayakoba Golf Classic
A bad month was rescued by Luke Donald’s 40/1 success in the WGC Accenture Match Play, where he beat off Martin Kaymer in the final. Breaking with tradition, the YourGolfTravel tipster put up four against the field for this event – one from each of the four groups – and lost three early on as Ian Poulter crashed out at the first round, while Paul Casey and Rory McIlroy fell at the second round, leaving the challenge all up to Ryder Cup star Donald, who duly delivered.
David Toms had shared the first round lead of the Mayakoba Golf Classic, but couldn’t build on that share of the lead, and eventually finished in six-way tie for fifth alongside anther selection, Brian Gay. Dead-heat rules applied meant only pennies in return, however.
And so a poor month was salvaged, with a £1 each-way single on all February’s picks showing an overall profit of £18.71, including stakes, making a year-to-date total profit of £49.71!
