The champagne is flowing at the Onyria Palmares Beach & Golf Resort, and rightly so. Not only is the golf course at this remarkable resort on its way to celebrating the anniversary of its opening in June 2011, it has also received considerable praise since then and is now recognised as one of the finest golf courses not just in the Algarve, but the whole of Portugal.
Having been re-launched last year following an extensive redesign of Frank Pennick’s original layout, the Onyria Palmares Course has received countless plaudits including being voted the second best course in Portugal by readers of Today’s Golfer magazine, just 6 months after opening for play! It was also ranked number 26 in Golf World’s poll of the Top 100 Golf Courses in Europe; the 3rd highest new entrant on the list.
No matter which combination of holes you choose to play at Onyria Palmares, you are treated to superb views from start to finish.
Three loops of nine holes await budding golfers travelling to the Algarve for some fun in the sun and while each offers a different challenge to the last, they are all equally enjoyable. The Alvor, Lagos and Praia courses, all designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, enjoy amazing panoramic views of the shimmering Alvor Lagoon, the “Meia-Praia” beach and the Bay of Lagos.
Robert Trent Jones Jnr’s has designed a golf course with the highest level of international tournament golf in mind and thanks to his expertise a pleasurable golf experience also awaits for us weekend warriors!
With a collection of links style holes that border the sand dunes near the coastline, and other picturesque tree lined holes with a distinct parkland flavour, Palmares offers golfers a heady blend of styles that will keep you entertained throughout. The elevation changes and undulations of the estate’s higher ground provide a stimulating juxtaposition to the flatter links land near the coast and throughout the course the conditioning is first class with slick, smooth greens and well manicured fairways and tees.
Elevation changes and picturesque, tree lined holes provide an interesting contrast to the flatter, links style holes that run along the coastline.
While the Alvor course plays through pine tree-lined corridors with the majority of holes ascending hillsides or descending through intimate valleys, the Lagos course is a mixture of parkland and links features, and the Praia is set on classic seaside dunes-land exposed to the elements.
Word has continued to spread about what’s on offer at Onyria Palmares and in 2012 alone, some 14,000 rounds have already been played! Sales Director Joao Pinto Coelho believes the resort’s reputation will continue to grow and so do we.
He said: “We enjoyed a fabulous first year and to be regarded so highly by two of the UK’s most prestigious golf magazines within the first six months was testament to the work put in by Onyria Resorts and, of course, the inimitable Robert Trent Jones Jnr.
There are few courses in Portugal that can rival the eclectic mix of golf offered by Palmares, not to mention the stunnig vistas.
“The reaction to the golf course from visitors has been universally positive. I remember what an Irish friend said to me when he first came over to visit. He said ‘I won’t tell anybody about Onyria Palmares otherwise very soon you won’t have availability for me to play anymore’. He was joking but as people are becoming more aware we are finding ourselves busier and busier.”
There is little doubt over the quality of the golf on offer at Palmares and with excellent accommodation options and the delights of Lagos nearby, it is no surprise that Palmares is such a favourite with regular golf holiday visitors to the popular Portuguese coastline.
To see what all the fuss is about, why not make your next Algarve Golf Break one to remember by paying a visit to one of the finest additions to the European golf scene in years?
