A stellar field heads to China for the closing WGC event of 2015, and it’s one where the cream usually rises to the top.
Since it became a WGC event in 2009, only one winner here (Francesco Molinari in 2010) had not previously won a major or WGC. This is a real test of golf and after last year’s experiment of growing the rough (Bubba Watson’s -11 winning score compared to Dustin Johnson’s -24 the year before) it looks as if it could be another tough week.
While both Johnson and Watson are, as we know, absolute boomers off the tee, don’t let that cloud your judgement. Last year Bubba played a remarkable 72 holes; for the most part he was ordinary at best, but he blitzed the par-5s, then holed out from a bunker at the last to get into a playoff.
Rory McIlroy is favourite in a field that includes Jordan Spieth, and that’s not happened for a while. Rory certainly has form here – he’s never been worse than 6th – while Spieth has struggled in his two visits. But we know Spieth is a different golfer to the one of 12 months ago and it would be no surprise if he triumphed here – with the rough up he’ll keep it straight and it could play into his hands.
