Celtic Manor Golf Break – Customer Review

December 1, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Celtic ManorI organised a two day golf break to Celtic Manor for 18 golfers from Brett Vale Golf Club in Suffolk and what a fantastic trip we had.

The resort, the hotel, the golf courses, the staff and the service were all top class and the deal itself of £79 for 2 rounds of golf and bed and breakfast at this outstanding venue was nothing short of fantastic. Conversations are already taking place to discuss a return trip as soon as possible!

We had a mixed party comprising 13 golfers and 5 non golfers who, by all accounts enjoyed the resort just as much as we did which speaks volumes for the other facilities at Celtic Manor; proves it’s not all about the golf courses!

Montgomerie Course 10th

The Celtic Manor resort is massive, but once you have arrived and parked your car you can get around the resort using the courtesy mini bus service just by asking a member of staff to arrange a collection for you. All very efficient and I can’t tell you how friendly the staff were!

As it happened we had a misty/foggy 1st day when we played The Montgomerie Course. Much of the time there was very little visibility, although when we got down to the 3rd green there were lovely clear views of the stunning 2010 course sitting seductively in the valley below us, with the fairways meandering in between the huge water hazards…one day I’m sure I will be back to have a crack at this fantastic Ryder Cup venue.

The Montgomerie course is a real challenge when you can see where you are going but even more so in the conditions we played in! We were advised by Your Golf Travel that buggies would be helpful on this course, and this advice proved to be spot on! It is very hilly in places and the walks between greens and tees would have been taxing to say the least. Despite the conditions the party enjoyed the course and are enthusiastic to play it again. I must play better when I can’t see what I’m doing as I won the day with 31 points on count-back, which was a real bonus.

2010 Course 14th hole

We got up on day 2 to gorgeous sunshine, had an excellent buffet breakfast, donned our shades and then played The Roman Road course. The starter was a friendly Geordie who gave us some really helpful advice, but not all of us followed it! What a superb day, with some great golf holes and spectacular views. A member of our group came within inches of getting a hole in one on the 11th, a short Par 3 adjacent the road running through the resort. Although it took our nearest the pin tenner it wouldn’t have gone very far for his bar bill had the ball dropped in the hole!

Finding the fairways on both these courses makes a huge difference. The rough was really penal on both days. First of all finding the ball was difficult but then getting it back into play was a real challenge, and we were told that they had recently reduced the rough to quicken the pace of play!

We had a little bonus to finish our stay. As we had expressed an interest in playing the 2010 course on our next visit, a courtesy visit was arranged for us to the 2010 clubhouse that is down a private road and only normally only accessible to members and green fees. We soaked up the atmosphere and memories of the Ryder Cup from the views over the 18th and of the club house, as well as the pictures and photos throughout the building. Just being in those exquisite locker rooms where our heroes had been was a real treat!

Roman Road 3rd

We had our drinks, something to eat and our presentations in this fantastic setting, providing us with more positive memories of this great golfing trip. The overall view from our party is 10 out of 10, and we will be returning without a doubt…as soon as possible in fact.

This was the first group golfing trip I have organised, and I must thank Your Golf Travel for their really helpful advice and assistance. I will be arranging more trips in the future and will certainly be booking with YGT again.
