The Ryder Cup might still be some months away, but no less than nine past Ryder Cup captains will lock horns with one another in a high quality field to contest this year’s Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie.
The event, to be played in the Angus town between July 22-25 will feature Corey Pavin, who will be captain of this year’s United States team, making him the first presiding Ryder Cup captain to play in the event.
Pavin will be joined in the event by each of the last five European captains – Sir Nick Faldo; Mark James; Bernhard Langer; Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam, as well as former United States captains Tom Kite; Tom Watson and Tom Lehman, who will be one of Pavin’s assistants for the Celtic Manor clash.
A host of former Ryder Cup players will also be among those competing for a share of the $2million prize pot including Mark Calcavecchia, Mark O’Meara, Sandy Lyle and defending champion Loren Roberts who will be seeking a third Seniors Open Championship win.
Gary Player, himself a three time Senior Open Champion, also returns for the event held at the course where he won The Open Championship in 1968. Then, Player hit perhaps the ‘greatest shot of his career’ – a three-wood approach into the 14th hole which landed came to rest just inches from the pin to help him hold off Jack Nicklaus and win the second of his three Claret Jugs.
