France has been awarded the 2018 Ryder Cup after cries for it to be handed to Spain following the passing of the Legendary Spaniard, Seve Ballesteros. The 2018 match will be held at Le Golf National near Paris and will be only the second Ryder Cup to visit continental Europe. The first time it strayed away from the UK and Ireland it was played on Seve’s home turf at Valderrama and the Spaniard, as captain, inspired his team to a memorable win against a strong American team.

The French bid beat off competition from rival candidates Spain, Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands. Pascal Grizot, head of the Ryder Cup Commission at the French Federation said, “The decision … is a real honour for our country, the French Golf Federation and all the public and private partners who have supported the bid.”

European Tour Chief Executive, George O’Grady has dismissed the notion that awarding it to France is a missed opportunity to pay tribute to the late Seve Ballesteros. He stated his awareness of the importance of Seve to European golf and went on to explain, “Every thing we do as a European Tour is to honour him.”
