Bankers line up for the dream golf job

Times Online

Interested in the ultimate job in golf? You had better hurry. Your Golf Travel, a website selling golf holidays that was set up by a pair of former City boys, is offering someone £50,000 to review, ergo play, golf courses around the world for one year. Since the job ad appeared in July, 4,000 people have applied.

Among the applicants are former Lehman, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley bankers. There has also been interest from the gainfully employed at Goldman Sachs and Nomura. The deadline for entries is October 31, after which a shortlist of 36 will be interviewed. Then 18 will play for the job — and a replica Claret Jug trophy — in a tournament at Celtic Manor in Newport, South Wales, in November.

Ross Marshall, co-founder of the website, has given me some tips for applying. Don’t be emotional: the “I hate my life, my job, save me” pleas are not washing. It helps if you play golf. This seems obvious, but a quarter of those who applied assumed watching it on TV was enough. And, this isn’t very PC, but if you have done time — one applicant was banged up for four years — please don’t bother.
