Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Dorset, having been founded in 1891. However, its modern facilities and contemporary attitude make it a joy for the visiting golfer, as do the views. It’s so picturesque around here, even the BBC used the club’s cliff top as a film location!
Set on the beautiful Jurassic coastline, with views stretching from Lyme Bay across to Portland, the course manages to be both entertaining and challenging to most ability levels. The first two holes are strong par-4s, and when you stand on the tee of the par-5 3rd, the incredible Jurassic coastline comes into view.
The cliff-top layout features stone walls, lots of mounding and bunkers that will constantly challenge your decision-making. Nowhere more so than at the 6th, Bridport and West Dorset’s signature hole. This is often mentioned as one of the best short holes in the world. Although only 135 yards long, it drops nearly 100 feet from the tee to a green that’s heavily guarded by bunkers. If the wind is up, club selection can be a challenge to say the least! Once played, never forgotten, as they say.
The club also offers an excellent restaurant, a lounge and spike bar, as well as a driving range and putting green. The lounge bar and dining room have excellent views of the course and the putting green, while the bar benefits from a magnificent vista of Bridport and the surrounding countryside.
