Came Down was originally founded in 1896 as the Dorchester Golf Club, and boasts an impressive history. The golf course was designed by Harry S. Colt, whose outstanding architectural reputation is a result of projects such as Wentworth, Sunningdale, Pine Valley, Royal Lytham and Muirfield.

At 6,255 yards from the back tees, Came Down is not the longest around, but Colt's legacy is a subtle test that demands accuracy above all else, especially from the tee. There are few golfing venues along the South coast that can rival the panoramic views from Came Down; 360 degree vistas take in Weymouth, Dorchester, Maiden Castle and the Isle of Wight.
A regular visitor to the golf course in its early days was a certain Samuel Ryder, who observed that the head professional of the time, Ernest Whitcombe, was an outstanding talent, but could not afford to play in serious tournaments. Samuel was aware that many American professionals visited Britain and were backed by serious capital; showing some decent ingenuity, the seed merchant negotiated a friendly fixture between the best local players and the visiting Americans, and thus the Ryder Cup was born. The astonishing history alone at Came Down makes it a fascinating visit, in addition to Colt's superb golf course.
