Cabot Highlands

9.6
Excellent See all 19 reviews

Cabot Highlands (the course many of us still slip and call Castle Stuart) is a cracking modern links in the Highlands and well worth a place on any serious Scotland itinerary. Consistently ranked among the world's best courses, this Gil Hanse design has hosted the Scottish Open, with past winners including Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson.

What makes Cabot Highlands special is how it blends contemporary design thinking with the raw, traditional links experience you'd expect from Scotland's best coastal courses. Course developer Mark Parsinen, the man behind Kingsbarns Golf Links, worked with Hanse to create a layout that feels entirely at home among its golfing neighbours, even though it's one of the newer names on the Scottish links list. The routing makes the most of the Moray Firth edge, with exposed holes where the wind quickly becomes part of the strategy and raised greens that demand proper links shots.

Location is another huge draw. Cabot Highlands sits just minutes from Inverness and its airport, making it one of the most accessible championship links in Scotland. You're also within easy striking distance of Nairn Golf Club and Royal Dornoch, two of the finest links courses anywhere. String those three together and you've got a Highland golf break that's genuinely hard to beat.

Looking to build a Highlands tour around it? You can pair Cabot Highlands with Royal Dornoch and Nairn for a brilliant 3-course break.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want a Top 100-calibre Highlands links that's easy to reach from Inverness and pairs perfectly with Royal Dornoch and Nairn.

Who is it best for?
Players who enjoy thinking their way round in the wind, love big coastal views and want a modern links that still feels unmistakably Scottish.

Castle Stuart Links

Designers Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse have capitalised on a majestic parcel of land to carve a golfing marvel. The spectacular setting overlooking the Moray Firth presents a memorable seascape punctuated with local landmarks such as the Kessock Bridge, Chanonry Lighthouse, Fort George and Ben Wyvis.

Castle Stuart Links is the epitome of contemporary links course architecture. Here nature bequeathed an opportunity for a links golf course to enjoy a rich landscape texture of whins, gorse and broom, heather and marram – a landscape mosaic of rugged beauty. It is a true links experience with rumpled fairways, offering changes in lie and stance; partially revetted, natural bunkers and infinity edge greens that allow the scenery and key landmarks to be put on display.

Having played host to the Scottish Open four times since it opened in 2009 with champions including Luke Donald, Jeev Milkha Singh, Phil Mickelson and Alex Noren, Castle Stuart has become a must play when visiting the Highlands of Scotland.

Old Petty

Old Petty, an 18-hole Tom Doak design, is an authentic celebration of Inverness’s rich history.

Doak’s routing threads along a tidal estuary, bringing golfers even closer to the 400-year-old castle, and plays alongside Old Petty Church, which was built in 1839.

From the outset, golfers will notice its unique design: the 1st and 18th holes cross over each other. Rare in modern golf, this bold feature balances playability with strategic intrigue.

A true links experience, Old Petty is an exciting new chapter alongside its world-renowned neighbour, Castle Stuart Links.

Amazing!

Lovely setting, friendly staff, great food and good experience. course is a bit contrived in places with too few bunkers and radical humps on greens that if you haven't played before are not visible until you get to the green.

This is a course where the second shot is the one that really matters. Wide fairways from every tee box means that golfers of all abilities will enjoy the course. However to score well you need to have your short game in good nick. The greens can be deceptively undulating, so a caddie is a must for this course if you want to score well. Incredible practice facilities, and super friendly staff in the club house. This course is a must visit for anyone in the area of any ability.
