The course is laid out around the imposing structure of the Welcombe hotel, and the designer has made full use of the natural undulations of the land to create a course that will make talented golfers think hard, while also remaining a playable and enjoyable experience for players of all abilities. If you have a private function, the Open Championship Suite, based in the clubhouse, can seat up to 120 guests.

Originally constructed in 1886, the Welcombe Hotel is a magnificent Jacobean-style house whose grandiose character is still very much in evidence.

The façade has not changed, and the oak-panelled lounge and four-poster suites exude extravagant austerity, but all this is perfectly complemented by the contemporary style of the garden rooms and the spa facility.

The 78 en-suite bedrooms are superbly finished, and are sympathetically decorated and furnished to reflect the traditional style of the hotel itself; some rooms feature original antique pieces, while the suites are perfect for a special occasion, designed around the incredible four-poster beds. The public areas are ideal for a relaxing moment, especially on the luscious sofas that are placed next to the open fires in the lounge.

For the more active visitor, there is a gym with cutting edge technology, an aerobics studio and floodlit all-weather tennis courts.

The a la carte restaurant serves a mouth-watering menu of English and European cuisine, overlooking the stunning Italian gardens.
