The Emerald Course is named as such in a tribute to its lush, green environment, and is the perfect resort course, being suitably challenging for skilled players, whilst remaining playable for the average visitor. The natural undulations of the landscape work in harmony with the strategically positioned water hazards and sand traps to create many challenging holes, while the superb greens are expertly maintained to ensure that they putt beautifully throughout the year.
The Sapphire Course may be considerably shorter than the Emerald, but it is no less entertaining. At 5,700 yards, you would not expect to be unduly challenged, but the abundant hazards, particularly the water, make matching the par of 66 extremely difficult. A deadly short game is priceless around the Sapphire, where those with a good grasp of the ‘scoring shots' - from within 100 yards - will no doubt reap the rewards.
Hill Valley's two golf courses and excellent facilities make it an ideal host for a corporate golf day.

We had a great time at Hill Valley, the courses and hotel were really excellent, we would like to go on another golf break next year and wondered if they would do the same deal if we booked early enough. Regards
Just got back from a golfing weekend to Hill Valley near Chester. What a super weekend we had.Regards
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but I have been on holiday in France...sadly it was not a golf holiday!
Now, with regards to the golf break at Hill Valley in Shropshire- the four of us who went were all in agreement with the following summary.
The Emerald golf course was excellent. It was in very good condition and is set up really well with lots of mature trees and some lovely views. It is not an easy course and I suspect that mid to high handicappers who don't hit straight would find it quite difficult yet still enjoyable.
The Sapphire course was enjoyable but not a patch on the Emerald. The setting is quite nice but there are 7 par threes (too many in our opinion) and the greens weren’t as good as the ones on the Emerald.
The rooms in the hotel were excellent - clean and modern with lots of space and comfortable beds...very important after a long day’s golf! The staff at reception, in the bar and in the pro shop were very attentive and friendly. However the service in the restaurant, while friendly, were not as efficient as in other parts of the hotel. Maybe they are all new to the job! The food itself was good so no complaints there. The bar prices were a bit racy but never the less we still enjoyed a fair bit of wine and the odd beer! Finding the hotel was easy as it is well signposted and it has lots of car parking next to the main entrance.
As always the service I received from Your Golf Travel was first class and although Golfbreaks.com are always e-mailing me with offers I refuse to use anybody else. As usual 10 out of 10 for YGT!
Overall our golf break was a success and we are looking forward to sampling other golf resorts in the future. We will certainly be booking with YGT!
Once again, thanks for everything.
I would have sent in this review sooner but I actually decided to stay at Hill Valley for an extra day...that’s how much I liked the place! Our entire golf break was a great success; the course was brilliant as was the hotel and all the staff at Hill Valley worked very hard to make our golf holiday as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.
Both of the golf courses were in marvellous condition and were very enjoyable. Perhaps they were a little too hilly for our group. We were given a warm welcome into the Club House and the accommodation was very good. We shared the dining room with a couple of other parties which made for a fun atmosphere and the staff were friendly and efficient.
The price of our golf holiday package was outstanding for what we got so a big thanks must go to Your Golf Travel. A vote was taken and the overall verdict was a solid 8 out of 10.
I have just returned from a 2 night stay and play golf break at Macdonald Hill Valley in Shropshire and I have to say it is a great place for a golf break.
The hotel was outstanding and the two golf courses are the best we have played on. The staff could not have done more to ensure our golf trip was a relaxing and comfortable one. The rooms were very spacious and clean we had 4 twins which overlooked the 1st tee. The food was very nice and the bar staff very polite. There is also the option to take a short stroll into the nearby village which we did on the Saturday.
Overall we had a great golf break and will be keen to return to Hill Valley in the future. We will be booking an annual golf break with Your Golf Travel at a different venue each time so get thinking on how you’re are going to top Hill Valley!
Thanks for your emails wishing us well on our golf break to Macdonald Hill Valley. We received a text just before we played on the first day which was a nice touch. This was our first family golf break and we have to say the experience of booking with Your Golf Travel was a real pleasure and we enjoyed the golf break from start to finish.
Both of the golf courses were in great condition and whilst both are parkland they played very differently to each other. From the wide open spaces of the Emerald Course to the tighter lines of the Sapphire both courses offer very different challenges yet are equally enjoyable.
The hotel is excellent. The food was great, the rooms were spacious and ours had a particularly nice view of the 18th green and the 1st tee. The Spa was superb as well.
The first thing we did on arriving home was to pick up the YGT brochure and start to plan our next golf break!
We have just returned from this one night, two rounds Sunday Special golf break at Macdonald Hill Valley.
The two golf courses complemented each other perfectly, each presenting their own unique challenges. They were both in excellent condition and the greens were amongst the very best we have been privileged to play. The complex was first rate, extremely clean, and welcoming. The staff members from cleaners to management were courteous, friendly and efficient.
The restaurant was quality with attentive staff serving excellent food. The bar areas were comfortable with a well stocked bar. The bar prices for food, alcoholic drinks and teas/coffees were expensive but this is a criticism one could make of many other similarly rated venues.
Another plus was we were offered a private room for our party to use for our presentations ceremony. This golf break was a definite nine out of ten. I only give it 9 because there is always room for improvement!
As for YGT, this must be the 7th or 8th trip you have managed for us and as always we receive first rate service from everyone we deal with. You make it so easy to arrange these golf breaks so give yourselves a pat on the back! Nothing is ever too much trouble and I know I'm not the easiest to deal with. I would and do recommend your company to other golfers I meet.
The Golf course was in excellent condition considering all the rain we have had over the last few months, we all remarked about the fantastic work the green keepers and ground staff had done to make the course playable.
The layout was excellent and good for all abilities. The welcome we had from all the Hotel Staff and the Golf Professional was first class. They couldn't do enough for us. The Golf and Hotel cannot be faulted, the quality of the rooms and food was second to none. The atmosphere in the Hotel in particular was great. The Golf Course was very easy to find and well signposted.
The Hotel and Golf Course I would rate 10 out of 10.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Your Golf Travel to my golfing friends. I will be in touch for next year. Once again, thank you.
The golf break to Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf & Country Club was superb. The two courses provided a real challenge and different players benefited from the different yardage and hole types. The greens although a little wet ran well, rewarding the good putts, but punishing the bad putts like a sadistic torturer (I had more of the latter). The hotel staff were really helpful and everything went smoothly, booked in on arrival, comfortable rooms, and all really friendly. Drinks were expensive but nothing compared the losses on the course!
The overall experience was great, thanks YGT!
On our drive down to Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf & Country Club for our golf break the weather did not look very promising as it was very foggy. We arrived in plenty of time for our tee time at twelve o’clock. Our group all met in the spike bar to sample the hotels bacon bap, by now the weather had turned into bright sunshine the perfect weather for golf. Our first round was on the Sapphire course which turned out to be a good test of golf and our scores reflected this and were enjoyed by all. On retiring to our rooms which were first class with a splendid view down the first fairway and looking over the eighteenth green.
The evening we all prepared with a few beers thanks to the one hundred pound voucher from Your Golf Travel, ready for the battle with championship course the Emerald, a good night was had with lots of laughs. Up early looking forward to another cracking day, but the weather was not as kind as the previous day. Never mind we had the breakfast to look forward to and we were not disappointed; we had the full works which like the evening meal was superb. Now all topped up ready for the challenge, the weather had improved, the course was in good condition but a bit wet under foot .Monday is ladies day at Hill Valley but this was not a problem as the girls moved quite quickly.
The Emerald course is real challenge birdies are hard to come by, there are many in the woodlands but we managed a few of our own. The scores were all respectable the winner with 37pts.
The weekend was a great success thanks to yourself and the staff at Hill Valley who were very friendly and helpful thanks once again to YGT for organising a fantastic golf break.
Just wanted to say that I had a really nice golf break at Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf & Country Club and whilst the quality of the golf wasn't up to much! I could find almost nothing to fault about the course or hotel. The Emerald course was excellent, very quiet with some really challenging holes, the 18th especially was particularly difficult. The Sapphire course is slightly more condensed and less picturesque but only by a small amount.
My only issue with the courses was that it is not an easy course to navigate as the direction to the next tee was not often signposted that well. The Hotel was great value for money, the room's were large well equipped and really comfortable. The attached spa/gym is modern, attractive and the equipment is all of good quality. The food was nice and the waiting staff were very welcoming and helpful. Overall I would give this break a 9/10 as for the price I paid it was an absolute bargain. Finally, the service from YGT was brilliant and I will definitely be recommending them highly to all my friends.
Macdonald Hill Valley Golf & Country Club is the best venue for a golf break we have visited under YGT!
Arrived day after storms of Sunday, played Emerald course which had been under water day before, bit damp but fantastic condition. Next day, played the shorter course, again after a night of rain, thought it would be a doddle, not so, very tight but great challenge.
The hotel was fantastic, rooms and facilities world class, food expensive but top range, price of a pint… don’t ask.
Overall, a great experience, which we shall repeat again but with bigger group.
If you have not yet used YGT to arrange your golf visits, make sure you do in future, I don’t know how they do it but long may it continue.
The whole weekend golf break at Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf & Country Club was really enjoyable. Although the weather bit mixed on Friday it was great Saturday. Both courses were in excellent condition and played well. Everyone enjoyed both the golf and the hotel.
We all would recommend this trip to all handicap golfers. Thank to YGT once again and can’t wait for our next one. And we will be certainly be visiting Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf & Country Club again in the not too distant future.
