The scorecard splits in an interesting way: the outward half plays to a par of 35 with a single par five, the 416-metre 4th, while the back nine is the longer half at par 37, offering three par fives and three genuine chances to post a score if you can keep the ball in play long enough to take them.

The course covers 125 acres of hillside and the elevation changes are constant throughout. Kirby used the natural contours of the volcanic landscape to build a routing that keeps you thinking from the first tee to the last green. There are no throwaway holes here. The terrain demands attention, and the penalty for a wandering mind tends to be a ball lost in the lava.

One of the most memorable stretches comes from the 11th to the 14th, where the design leans hardest into the island's character. Low-lying stone walls, the kind you see dividing fields and terraces all across Lanzarote, angle across the fairways at various points and force a genuine decision about the best line of play. Do you carry the wall on the direct route, or play away from it and accept a longer approach? It is the kind of strategic question that good course architecture should ask, and Kirby handles it with real intelligence.

The black volcanic waste areas that frame so many holes are not just decorative. They are penal, visually striking and a constant reminder of where you are playing. The crunch of volcanic gravel underfoot, the warm basalt in the afternoon sun, the Atlantic catching the light from the higher tees: it is a course that feels different from the usual holiday round, both visually and strategically.
