Machrihanish Golf Club

Machrihanish Golf Club

The Kintyre Peninsula may not be particularly accessible, being a decent drive from the city of Glasgow, but it does lend its amazing landscape to an extremely spectacular golf course - Machrihanish.

    Machrihanish Golf Club

Constantly ranked in lists of the world's top 100 courses, Machrihanish also boasts what is regarded by many as the best opening hole on the planet; standing on the first tee facing a long carry across the bay is without doubt one of golf's great experiences.

The outward nine skirts the shoreline and the beautiful sand dunes of the peninsula, while the homeward stretch takes in views of the South Kintyre hills.

Prestigious national amateur tournaments grace the links at Machrihanish year on year, underlining the fact that this is one of Scotland's true gems, and is well worth the drive.

The cottage we stayed in was excellent for our golf break. It was very well furnished and we enjoyed the extra privacy. If we stayed in Machrihanish again that would be our first choice. The closeness to the hotel was very useful for accessing the bar. Hotel staff were very helpful and friendly. Prices for food and drink were reasonable too. This far from civilisation we had feared that they would be higher. Overall, the trip represented good value for money.

We preferred the established course to be honest. We think it's a fairer test. The Dunes course was fascinating but perhaps didn't quite live up to the hype. We weren't disappointed but if we had the time to play only one of the courses we'd choose Machrihanish itself. There were one or two signage issues on the course which we shared with the staff at The Dunes.

A couple of minor points that would be worth sharing with future clients: The Kintyre Club doesn't serve food in the evenings at this time of the year and is closed on Monday evenings anyway. Golfers should also be recommended to purchase the strokesaver guide, especially for the Dunes. We would have been in real difficulty without them.

Thanks again to YGT for their guidance and support. We will certainly consider YourGolfTravel for future ventures.
