Owston Hall sits in the grounds of a 147-acre estate in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, with the A1 and M62 both close by, so it's an easy one for a quick UK golf break. The setting is classic English parkland, with mature trees, an old country-house backdrop and a terrace that looks straight over the closing hole, which is always worth a pause after your round.

The hotel has 30 en-suite bedrooms split across two parts of the property. Fifteen rooms are in the original hall, a 17th-century wing where each room has its own character. The other fifteen are in the Old Stables, a separate block that's a little more straightforward in style but still comfortable.

Food and drink is on-site in the bar and the Victorian-style conservatory restaurant, both with views across the course. In the warmer months, the terrace is a popular spot for a post-round pint while you watch groups come in on 18.

One practical note before you book: the spa and gym are currently closed for renovation and are expected to reopen later this year. If your trip is all about golf, good food and a handy location, it's a solid fit.

Who is this for?
Golfers looking for a straightforward parkland break in South Yorkshire, with easy motorway access from across the north and Midlands. It suits societies, small groups and anyone after a well-maintained championship course without the headline price tag.

Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers who enjoy tree-lined parkland golf and want a proper test that's hosted professional events. Also ideal for groups travelling from Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire or Lincolnshire who need a central, accessible base with on-site accommodation and dining.

Robin Hood Golf Course

Close to 6,000 yards at is fullest length, Owston Hall is a stern test of golf, encountering mature oak trees and treacherous water hazards. The tenth hole is the star of the course, where golfers must only travel 351 yards, but must negotiate two strategically positioned lakes.

Over the years, significant changes have been made to the golf course to offer something for everyone. A Black tee option has been added meaning golfers can take on the really long golf course, or the much shorter yardage. No matter what level of golfer you are, there is something for you at Owston Hall.

Owston Hall is a terrific example of ‘risk/reward' golf and is characteristic of the enjoyable challenges at this South Yorkshire classic.

Accommodation at Owston Hall Hotel

Owston Hall's accommodation is split across two distinct parts of the property. Fifteen rooms occupy the old wing, housed in the original 17th-century building. Each has been decorated individually to reflect the character and period detail of the hall itself, so expect exposed beams, traditional furnishings and a sense of history that's rare in modern golf hotels. If you like a bit of character and don't mind the quirks that come with an old building, the old wing is the one to ask for.

The remaining fifteen rooms are located in the Old Stables, a separate block that trades period charm for consistent comfort. The rooms here are spacious, well-appointed and finished to the same 4-star standard, but without the quirks and character of the old wing. If you prefer a more contemporary feel or simply want a ground-floor room with easy access, the Stables are a solid choice.

All 30 rooms are en-suite and the setup across both wings is reliably good. Owston Hall isn't trying to be a luxury resort, it's a comfortable, well-run golf hotel that does the basics right and leaves you free to focus on your golf.

The Victorian conservatory restaurant is the main dining space, serving modern British dishes with views straight out over the course. It's the sort of place where you can have a relaxed dinner after your round without needing to leave the estate. For something more casual, the bar and terrace are both popular spots, especially in summer when you can sit outside with a drink and watch groups finishing on the 18th. The terrace overlooks the green, so there's always something to watch and it's a natural gathering point for groups staying on-site.

One thing to note is that the spa and gym are currently closed for renovation. They're expected to reopen later this year, but for now, the focus is squarely on golf, food and comfortable rooms. If you're here for the course and the convenience of on-site accommodation, Owston Hall delivers exactly that.

Just back from our annual golf trip and overall we had a really enjoyable stay. The hotel itself was clean, comfortable and the staff were genuinely lovely throughout friendly, helpful and welcoming from start to finish. Drinks were also very reasonably priced which was a big plus for a group of 12. That said, for a hotel catering to golfers and groups, the facilities did feel lacking in a few important areas. The biggest disappointment was the complete absence of a sports bar atmosphere there wasn’t even a TV in the main bar area, which was surprising given the type of guests the hotel attracts. After a day on the course, somewhere to relax together and watch sport would have made a huge difference. The rooms also had no air conditioning, and with temperatures pushing 30 degrees on both days, it made sleeping quite uncomfortable. Overall, the staff and hospitality were excellent, but a few improvements to the facilities especially adding TVs/sports viewing areas and air conditioning would really elevate the experience for golfing groups.

The only reason for low scores is because we were looking forward to a swim and jacuzzi after 4 hours of golf in very hot sun. We then found out the Spa is closed and won't be opening again until late 2024! This was not mentioned at point of booking, I paid for a golf break with a Spa, but only got golf. Can't fault the hotel or staff but in the future please research the facility for what is actually open.

Great hotel, nice decor, fantastic staff and great value for money. The £30 for evening meal was more than ample and most of the party struggled to spend it.

The accommodation was very good, clean and spacious with tea and coffee in the rooms. Buffett breakfast was excellent. The hot Buffett in the evening was good but not supervised, our party of 32 shared the restaurant with another group of about 16 which was not a problem, BUT no one took control of the food serving leaving some at the rear with no choice or no food. They had to wait for more to be made. The bar was fine and the prices fair. They are new owners of only a few months and they did ask and received feedback and were gratefull, but a lot of work is required especially on the course!!!!!.

Really enjoyed playing the course overall. It was in very tidy condition throughout and the greens were excellent probably the standout part of the course for us. They rolled really well and were clearly very well maintained. The layout made for a good round and the course was enjoyable for players of different abilities in our group. Only small bit of feedback would be the rough, which felt a little less forgiving than a lot of other courses we’ve played. The growth was quite long in places, so balls that weren’t far off the fairway could be difficult to find. Not a major issue, just something we noticed during the round. Overall though, a really good course and one we enjoyed playing.

The course is in real need of some TLC we were a group of 10 and although we made it a great weekend we were disappointed with the condition of the course

Not the longest of courses and may not suit a low handicapper but well maintained. Friendly staff good pro shop speaking to some of the members a lot of upgrades are in the pipeline.

A short course, something like 5,888 yards. But the rough Is brutal and the greens are very small. Good condition and the views are great. Need to be precise from tee.

No locker room available , the bunkers were a disgrace with weeds growing in them and absolutely no sand , this was every bunker on the course , tees in very poor condition , sat nav watches no use as the yardages and holes were nothing like , Par 4 first hole 300 plus yards , showed 500 plus , wouldn’t return unless money was spent on improving most aspects

Nice course. We played as the greens were being prepped for the start of the summer season but they were still pretty quick and in lovely condition

I know we have just been through a lot of dry drought conditions but the course was way below standard and quite short. I saw only one sprinkler head on the course that I don't think has worked for a long time. They must have been using hose pipes to irrigate the course the greens were green, but most were dry and cracked on the perimeters and slow. the tee boxes and fairways were very ROUGH. The course used to be 7.500yds and championship standard. They now have a 9 hole par 3 course and a very poor 5,500yds of the yellow tees course. The back 9 showed a little more promise with the layout but NOT the condition. The new owners seem keen to improve the course but it will take some time and a lot of hard work and money. Jason and his staff were very helpful and understanding. It has left me a bit deflated as I could see and hear the disappointment from our 32 golfers who were used to a lot better venues. I felt gutted and let down having organised the trip!!.We will NOT be returning. It remains to be seen if I organise another outing next year?? time is a healer. Yours John Cairns.

Played this course twice as part of a golf package. The first round was hideously slow with people who clearly refuse to let you through (1pm tee), the next day (8.30am tee) was brilliant and pace of play was great. The course is nice, but definitely needs some TLC. For what we payed, I was happy with the course. If you want a championship golf course, then Owston isn’t for you. We had a great time.
