When Rees Jones designs a golf course, you know you're in for something special. The architect behind Torrey Pines and Bethpage Black has brought his championship pedigree to the Chiltern Hills, creating a layout that weaves through pure English countryside while delivering a test worthy of serious attention. The Oxfordshire sits less than 30 minutes from Oxford and within an hour of London, making it one of the most accessible quality golf experiences in the south of England.
Jones has used the natural roll of the land to build a course that challenges every level of golfer without punishing mid-handicap players. The routing takes full advantage of the Chilterns' contours, with elevation changes that reward strategic thinking and penalise lazy swings. From the tee it rewards a plan, especially if you're trying to stay on the right side of the fairway for the best angle in. Stronger players can be aggressive, but it's not the sort of place where you can switch off and simply lash driver all day.
Off the course, The Oxfordshire delivers the kind of resort experience that turns a golf break into a proper getaway. The Tempus Spa offers Japanese-styled treatment rooms, an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and a well-equipped gym. The Sakura Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a wine and beer list that does justice to the kitchen's output. Clay pigeon shooting is available for groups looking to add variety to their stay.

Jones vision for the Oxfordshire is a modern parkland course in from the American mould, and the incredible course in its short existence has already featured on the European Tour hosting the Benson & Hedges International, Anderson World Matchplay and the English Ladies Open. Some of the professional game’s most prominent names have graced the course, which remains one of England’s best championship tests.
From the tournament tees The Oxfordshire reaches 7,192 yards, which is more than enough for most golfing mortals, and throughout the layout are dotted some majestic holes. None is more famous than the 17th; this incredible par 5 has been named in Golf Magazine’s top 500 holes in the world, and is typical of the golfing adventure created by Jones.
Signature hole: 17th hole, Par 5 - 588 yards from the white tees.
A straight drive is required on this nerve-racking par-5, 17th hole to avoid the bunker on the right and the water to the left. The lake runs along the entire left edge of the fairway, with the green situated in the distance across the water. The safe but longer option is to play around the lake, while the longer hitters can have a crack at either a second fairway or the green itself in two.
Along with The Grove, The Oxfordshire is at the forefront of modern English championship golf design, with terrific facilities that make it ideal for hosting high profile corporate golf events as well as being the ultimate stop on a golf tour around Oxford.
The Oxfordshire Golf Club is located just 4 miles South West of Thame, just off of the M40 and 12 miles from the historic town of Oxford.

The Oxfordshire Hotel houses 50 rooms, all designed to maximise comfort and make the most of the estate's setting. You're staying on-site at a genuine golf resort here, not a roadside stopover, and the rooms reflect that level of attention.
The 46 executive rooms come with everything you'd expect from a modern four-star property: flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi, climate control and a private balcony that looks out over either the course or the surrounding Chilterns. The balcony is a genuine asset, particularly in summer when you can sit out with a drink and watch the sun drop behind the fairways. Rooms are quiet, with enough space for golf bags without cluttering the place, and positioned close to the clubhouse, spa and restaurant.
For groups celebrating a special occasion or anyone wanting more space, the four Penthouse Suites step things up considerably. These are large rooms with a separate lounge and bedroom, two TVs, double sinks and a larger bathroom set-up, plus a balcony big enough to host a small gathering. If you're organising a captain's trip or a milestone birthday break, the Penthouses give you a base that feels more like a private apartment than a hotel room.
The Sakura Restaurant is open all day, serving breakfast to fuel your round, lunch for those coming off the course at midday, and dinner for the full sit-down experience. The kitchen focuses on quality ingredients and signature dishes that go beyond standard hotel fare, with a drinks list that includes a well-curated selection of wines and local and international beers. It's the kind of restaurant where you're happy to eat every night of a three or four-night stay without feeling like you're repeating yourself.
Leisure facilities centre on the Tempus Spa, a secluded, Japanese-inspired space within the clubhouse that offers facials, massages and a range of treatments designed to sort out tight shoulders and lower backs after 36 holes. The spa also includes an indoor pool, sauna and steam room, plus a separate gym and fitness studio for anyone who wants to keep up their usual routine. For groups, clay pigeon shooting can be arranged on-site, adding a competitive element to your downtime between rounds.
The Oxfordshire sits just off the M40 near Thame, 12 miles from Oxford and within comfortable driving distance of both London and Birmingham. That makes it an ideal venue for society meets, corporate days and groups coming from different parts of the country. You're in the countryside, but you're not remote, and the combination of serious golf, luxury accommodation and a full resort setup makes it one of the stronger all-round packages in the south of England.
If you're putting together a UK golf break with easy motorway access and proper on-site facilities, The Oxfordshire is well worth a look. Include it in your next Your Golf Travel short break.

Good hotel. Great food. The staff could be a little more welcoming to be honest. £9.50 a pint for Guinness is a bit steep.

We enjoyed our 3 day stay last year and decided we liked the course that much we'd go back again this year. We had a super time and although a little windy, the sun shone and a great time was had by all 4 of us. I'd highly recommend TOGC to any looking for a fair golf challenge. Having played 6 rounds now, my only suggestion would be few more signs from Green to Tee. I'm pretty sure we'll return

Great trip at the Oxfordshire, a great course for all handicaps. The range was closed on the Monday morning and they have no nets so that was frustrating, there are also thousands of flies that bite you. Wear trousers or buy bug spray. They should really warn you about this. Drinks are expensive, £9.50 for a pint of Guinness was extortionate. It's a great venue for a golf trip, could just be made better with some slight tweaks.

Rooms were very well kept and clean. Spa with sauna steam and Jacuzzi were a nice bonus, although quite small and a little dated. Restaurant and bar were really nice and the food was delicious. Had our own private dining room because of the group size, which was a nice touch.

We had to bring our trip a few weeks earlier than last year so the greens were a little unready but plenty good enough for us. We are 45 x 60 year olds and grateful for the buggies on each of our 3 rounds. The Oxfordshire is a super course with many memorable holes. A great challenge for all handicap players.

Undulating fairways but nothing steep, mostly wide fairways with hidden hazards, lots of bunkers 114 apparently, and a few with lakes. Very pleasant to walk around. Was breezy when higher up but protected when in the dips, not a huge amount of trees but enough rough to make interesting.

Some signs around the course to show where the next tee is would speed things along. Also, indicators as to where the buggies can and cannot go would be helpful.

A lovely golf course. A really good mix of holes which were enjoyable to play. The second round was tougher because of the wind 🤣🤣 Hole 8, is a nice signature hole. I would say that there could be more signs for next tee boxes, and also advice about there not really being any cart paths which can get a little confusing (maybe it was just us) 🤣 A lovely place.
