Paraparaumu Beach, whilst put slightly in the shade by the stunning new golfing developments in New Zealand, remains a household name, made famous in the modern era by being the home of Steve Williams, caddy to the world's greatest golfer.

Before the arrival of Tiger's right hand man though, Paparauma Beach was known chiefly for its superb golf course.

In 1959, the golf course hosted the first of its twelve New Zealand Opens, and the quality of the layout, conceived by Alex Russell in 1949, remains well respected today. Although it is not located immediately on the coastline, Paparauma Beach exudes all the characteristics of a links course; the turf is firm and sandy, becoming parched and bouncy during the summer months.

When the wind gets up, which is the case more often than not, Paraparaumu Beach becomes a formidable test, but one that carries a loyal band of followers. Homely and welcoming, this is one of New Zealand's true gems.

Location: Paraparauma Beach, 60 miles North of Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
