Tucked on the edge of the Peak District National Park, Shrigley Hall Hotel is a 4-star Georgian country house that works brilliantly for golf groups who want a proper course, comfortable rooms and somewhere to unwind afterwards. You're close enough to Manchester and the motorway network for an easy run in, but far enough into the countryside to feel like you've escaped for the weekend.
Golf is the headline act. The 18-hole Donald Steel layout threads through mature woodland and open parkland, so you'll need a bit more than "driver and hope". Pick sensible targets, shape a few shots and you'll score, but stray offline and the trees will have their say.
Off the course, there's plenty to keep everyone happy. The BAZAAR Spa is a big draw, with an outdoor infinity pool, sauna, steam room, serenity pool and whirlpool spa. Spa access must be pre-booked and a supplement applies, with entry for guests aged 16 and over. There's also a gym in the Golf Lodge for guests aged 18 and over. The Courtyard Bar is the natural spot for a post-round drink with your group.

In typical Donald Steel fashion man made water hazards on the course are scarce and instead he uses the natural layout of the land to create a challenge for golfers. The narrow fairways and small green make are designed to challenge not only a player’s physical ability but also their course management capabilities as a lack of length has been substituted for tricky greens and minimal bail out areas off the tee. However, the lack of length means that the course is manageable for golfers of all handicaps meaning that enjoyment for your whole group is guaranteed.
In the past, Steel has been commissioned to advise on alterations to every course currently on the Open Championship rotation, which is a testament to his reputation within the design industry. The beautiful course weaves its way through the glorious landscape and gifts players with some incredible vantage points from which the stunning scenery can be observed.
Signature hole: par 3, 8th hole
The par 3, 8th hole is the renowned as Shrigley Hall’s signature hole and you will not disagree with this upon playing the course. The short par 3 measures in at 158 yards from the white tees and plays slightly downhill. The green is set back amongst the beautiful trees that inhabit the peak district meaning accuracy is imperative if you want a chance of making birdie here. The putting surface also has another defence, as well as trees flanking it there is also a small water hazard in front so club selection is key when looking to find the green on this short but testing par 3.

Hotel looked tired and dated. The window blinds in the bathroom didn’t cover the entire window area, and were broken. The bathroom was in need of an update. One of the bars closed and wouldn’t serve anyone, and pointed guests to another bar, which wasn’t open for another 10 minutes.

Party of 28 without any issues is pretty good, Staff were great, very helpful and polite. Made you feel appreciated. Rooms were good, hotel a bit of a maze but once you get your bearings it’s fine. Main building and views are stunning.

Accommodation was fine no problems at all. The food in the restaurant was excellent compared to some of the Golf food that is served at other venues. Making the point about the food because most stays at hotels in the UK for Golf packages the food is shocking it’s not the case at Shrigley hall though very good food. Excellent well done Shrigley for serving very good edible food.

We played two rounds at Shrigley. On the 2nd day we were behind a group of about 60. The last group in the 60, were a 3 ball, who lost at least 2 holes on the group in front. We phoned the pro shop, who said they would send someone out, and didn’t. By the end of the round, our buggy said we were 1 hour behind. Not much fun when we wanted to finish the round and travel home

Course is a fantastic layout however the slopes on some holes can really catch you out. General condition was good after such a wet winter. There were a few bare patches but not in the places your supposed to hit your ball. Some of the paths between holes need some serious maintenance. Games can be slow but that’s the joys of a society venue so no different to other venues. Overall a great weekend with fantastic weather for the second year running.

Stayed for 2 nights on a Sunday saver. We tee'd off at midday on the first round was it was a torturous 5.5 hrs. Frustrating aa at times 3 groups were waiting and held up on the tee bed. 2nd day was a good 4 hrs 10 mins. The course was wet in places so we played preferred lies and had to move the ball on some fairways to a dry part but the greens ran very well and true. The course was one whereby you could be rewarded with good shots, some fairways quite generous, a few risk reward holes but you could also get punished with errant shots. The show play on the first day took the gloss off an otherwise good stay which was excellent value for money.
July is the Peak District's hottest month with the temperature averaging 16 degrees so this is the best time to play if you are looking for some warm weather golf
