ST GEORGE'S HILL GOLF CLUB

Client Feedback 5 stars

When the amazingly secluded portion of land became available in 1911, the founders of St George’s Hill Golf Club immediately presented it to Harry S. Colt, who is among the most revered golf course architects of all time. His masterful creation that resulted is a true joy to behold, and is one that many believe to be the finest to bear his signature.

The golf course is buried deep within the exclusive St George’s Hill estate, and its blissful isolation is without doubt part of its allure. The club now has three loops of nine thanks to Donald Steel’s addition of the Green Nine, which is the realisation of plans mapped out by a member.

Carved out from the mature fir trees that dominate the estate, Colt’s course is awash with heather, spanning some glorious sandy turf that could be no better for golf. The layout itself is a marvellous test, winding through the woodland with some magical short holes. The club is known for the quality of its putting surfaces, which in spite of the winter weather remain pure and true.

There are a select few contenders for the crown of England’s greatest inland course, but St George’s Hill has a real claim. Fittingly carrying the name of the country’s patron saint, St George’s Hill is a genuine national treasure.
