Tucked into the Tamar Valley and less than 30 minutes from Plymouth, St Mellion International Resort is one of the South West of England's standout options for a UK golf break. You get two courses on site, genuine 4-star resort facilities and an easy run in from the A388, which makes it a strong shout for groups and short-stay getaways.

Golf is the headline. The Nicklaus Course is the star turn, a Jack Nicklaus design that's rightly viewed as one of the best layouts in England. One of the courses here has hosted European Tour golf, which tells you the standard. Pair it with the Kernow Course and you've got 36 holes that feel different enough to keep a weekend interesting, whether you're chasing a score or just trying to win the society bragging rights.

Off the course, it's a genuine 4-star resort rather than golf hotel with a bar. Rooms are spacious, the Elemis Spa is ideal after a day's walking and An Boesti makes a strong case for staying in rather than driving out. Add in the 25-metre pool, sauna and steam room and it's easy to see why St Mellion is consistently well reviewed by UK golfers.

If you want golf, comfort and plenty to do once the clubs are back in the boot, St Mellion ticks the boxes.

Golf Courses at St Mellion Estate

St Mellion is arguably the premier golfing destination in the South-West, boasting two championship courses, and has welcomed the European Tour's elite on no less than six occasions for the Benson and Hedges International.

Nicklaus Course

Opened in 1987, the Nicklaus Course at St Mellion was the Golden Bear's first project in the UK, and to this day Jack rates it as one of his best creations. The £2.5 million investment now complete was overseen by the Nicklaus design team.

From the championship tee markers the course measures 7,019 yards and is a thorough examination, but there are tees to suit golfers of all abilities. The Nicklaus is typical of its designer's architectural ethos, with a premium being placed on finding the correct position from the elevated tees in order to attack the flags. Inaccuracy will be punished severely by the strategically positioned bunkers and water hazards around this South-Western gem.

Did you know?  Jack Nicklaus speaks highly of his design, going as far as to say St Mellion is 'potentially the finest golf course in Europe'.

Kernow Course

Formerly known as the Old Course, St Mellion's Kernow is often in the shadow of Jack Nicklaus' creation next door, but it is a fine championship layout in its own right. Though not particularly long by modern standards - the Kernow measures 5,782 yards - there is no shortage of challenge and intrigue.

A major face-lift has seen the addition of new lakes and bunkers, plus some totally rebuilt putting surfaces. Spectacular scenery surrounds the course, whose highlights include the short 12th, where the green is guarded closely by water, and the memorable par-4 closing hole which demands two excellent strikes.

Accommodation at St Mellion Estate

The 4-star hotel sits conveniently beside the clubhouse and delivers exactly what you want after a day on the Nicklaus Course: space, comfort and quality. All 80 en-suite bedrooms are air-conditioned and decorated in a contemporary style that feels fresh rather than corporate. The rooms are genuinely spacious, fitted with modern amenities that work, and designed to let you relax properly between rounds.

Everything you need is on site, from the clubhouse and practice areas through to the spa and pool. You're not driving anywhere once you've checked in, which is exactly the point of a resort break. The hotel sits close enough to the first tee that you can roll out of bed, grab breakfast and be on the course without any faff.

For larger groups, societies or families, the Fairway Lodges offer a different option entirely. These self-contained properties range from one to five bedrooms and sit surrounded by the golf courses, giving you that immersive resort feel. You're still within easy reach of the clubhouse, but you've got your own living space to spread out, host a post-round debrief or simply enjoy the kind of sociable atmosphere that makes a golf break memorable.

The lodges are ideal if you're travelling with a bigger group and want somewhere to gather after the round without retreating to separate hotel rooms. The living areas are spacious, the kitchens are fully equipped if you fancy cooking, and the whole set-up feels more like a golf house party than a standard hotel stay. If cooking feels like too much effort after 36 holes, the Brasserie is a short walk away.

Both the hotel and lodges give you full access to the resort facilities, including the Leisure Club, spa and all the dining options. It's a flexible set-up that works whether you're a couple after a quiet weekend, a fourball chasing two days of golf or a society group filling multiple lodges for a captain's away trip.

Food & Drink

The An Boesti Restaurant overlooks the 18th green of the Nicklaus Course and serves innovative cuisine built around the best West Country produce. It's quality dining, the kind of meal that caps off a day's golf without feeling stuffy or overpriced. The menu changes with the seasons, and the kitchen knows how to handle local ingredients properly, from Cornish seafood through to estate-reared meat.

For something more relaxed, the Bewdern Bar & Brasserie runs throughout the day, serving everything from snacks to full meals in a warm, informal setting. It's the kind of place you can drop into after a morning round, grab a sandwich and a pint, then head back out for the afternoon tee time. The menu is straightforward, well-executed and priced sensibly, which matters when you're feeding a group over a few days.

When you're ready for that 19th-hole pint, the Nicklaus Golfer's Bar delivers, complete with wide-screen TV and a barbecue terrace for those rare sunny Cornish evenings. It's the natural gathering point after the round, with enough space for groups to spread out and enough atmosphere to make it feel like a proper golf club rather than a hotel bar.

Leisure Facilities

The Leisure Club gives you a 25-metre swimming pool, leisure pool, sauna, steam room and spa pool, plus tennis and squash courts if you've somehow got energy left after your round. The health spa and beauty salon is staffed by fully trained therapists offering signature treatments, facials, manicures, pedicures and massages, all designed to help you recover properly before the next day's golf.

St Mellion continues to rank as one of our customers' highest-rated UK golf resorts, and once you've experienced the combination of championship golf and genuine resort facilities, you'll understand why. It's the full package: two quality courses, comfortable accommodation, good food and enough off-course options to keep non-golfers happy if you're bringing partners or family.

St Mellion sits just off the A388 on the Cornwall-Devon border, only 20 minutes from Plymouth and a 20-minute drive from the Cornish seaside towns of Polperro and Looe. It's easily accessible, which matters when you're travelling with golf clubs and a group.

Great Golf hotel. Not super-posh, but certainly to an adequate standard... Food OK, again, not tip-top, but more than adequate. Staff very helpful indeed! Especially Peter (I think) at reception, and Garry in the pro shop. Many thanks!!

From arrival to departure, every member of staff we encountered was friendly, welcoming and helpful. Nothing ever seemed too much trouble, and it genuinely made a difference to the overall experience. The service was consistently warm and professional in the hotel, bars and restaurant. The food was also a real positive. There was a good selection available and everything we had during the stay was very enjoyable.the quality was good and there portions were generous. The spa facilities were another highlight spacious, relaxing and a great place to unwind after a day of golf. Where the hotel falls slightly short is in the rooms and some of the public areas. The bedrooms are quite basic for a resort of this reputation and felt a little tired in places. Our room had no fridge or coffee machine, the beds were not particularly well made, and the shower leaked onto the bathroom floor. None of these are huge issues individually, but together they stop the hotel from feeling as premium as the golf resort itself. The bars were also disappointing, especially the “sports bar.” It lacked atmosphere, had very small TVs which made watching live sport difficult, and the seating was surprisingly uncomfortable. It also closed fairly early midweek, which limited the evening atmosphere and our group ended up going back to our rooms. Overall, the staff, food and spa made for an enjoyable stay, but the hotel itself would benefit from a few upgrades and some extra attention to detail to match the quality of the golf facilities.

Much more forgiving than the Nicklaus course but still a great challenge. Everyone in the group really enjoyed this course, and it was in great condition...!!

Tough and tight challenge... Very nice conditions, but quite unforgiving in regard to narrow fairways and cliffs/drop-offs each side in many cases. Pretty spectacular.

The signature Nicklaus course at St Mellion is well worth experiencing. The course was in excellent condition and has several standout holes that are genuinely memorable. The par 4 sixth in particular is a fantastic golf hole and one that will stick in the memory. The layout is challenging throughout, with a real championship feel, and the scenery adds to the overall experience. Again there is no halfway house, you do pass close to the clubhouse between the 9th and 10th holes, making it easy enough to stop for refreshments if needed. The staff around the resort were, excellent and added to the overall experience. Where I’m slightly more critical is the value for money. The green fee pricing puts the Nicklaus course up against some very strong premium golf courses, and while it is definitely worth playing, I do feel it is slightly overpriced for the overall experience offered. The course quality is excellent, but at that price point expectations naturally become very high in terms of facilities. Overall though, it is still a course I would recommend playing at least once. It’s a challenging and memorable round on a beautifully maintained course, even if the pricing feels a little ambitious compared to some competing venues.

The course was in great condition and has some really memorable feature holes. It’s a challenging layout with plenty of stunning scenery throughout, making it enjoyable to play. The biggest downside was the pace of play. A 5 hour round is simply too long, and there didn’t seem to be any marshals visible managing the course. Slow play can happen, especially with larger groups out on the course, but it really needs to be managed better to keep rounds moving at a reasonable pace. Another disappointment was the halfway hut setup, which was just two vending machines. For a resort with such a strong golfing reputation, it felt underwhelming and could definitely be improved. That said, Kernow is a fantastic course and absolutely worth playing if you visit St Mellion.

The course was very wet under foot, due to the amount of rainfall the south of England has had. I think the course should have been rested for a few days and maybe rescheduled till a couple weeks after unfortunately. The course was still good though, just the condition was not the greatest.
