The Astbury

Tucked away in the heart of the Shropshire countryside lies The Astbury, with 300 acres of rolling hills, a stunning country hall and one of England’s finest championship golf courses. Designed by KK Downing, lead guitarist of Grammy award-winning heavy metal band Judas Priest, and home to our very own Darren Clarke, The Astbury promises a quality test of golf in the heart of the Severn Valley.

Hmm, something went wrong... would you mind trying again?

The par-71, 6,500 yard layout was designed by Downing himself and has been created to utilise the stunning Shropshire countryside to give golfers of all abilities a memorable golfing experience. With the course built to USGA standards, play is enjoyed year round at The Astbury. The slick playing surfaces are courtesy of their utilisation of creeping bent grass greens, something rarely seen in the UK. The Astbury, or Astbury Hall as it was known previously, has also hosted some of the shining lights of the professional circuit in 2013 with the Astbury Hall Classic on the Europro Tour which was won by James Hepworth with a -6 total in the 54 hole tournament.

While many will be drawn to the par-4, stroke index 1, 14th as its most outstanding hole, the 18th which measures 200 yards from the black tees, or 171 from the yellows, with water waiting any shot short of the putting surface is a dramatic finish to a great new course.

Darren Clarke believes it to “have a massive amount of potential...it is a wonderful venue”.

With Your Golf Travel ambassador Darren Clarke enlisted as The Astbury’s Tour Professional, remember to tell them Darren sent you!

In 2014, The Astbury hosted the very best from the Europro Tour with Garrick Porteous, the 2013 Amateur Championship winner, claiming victory after a 3-man playoff after tying on a -10 3 round total. Porteous' final round 66 included a crucial birdie 2 on the 18th hole.
