The Royal Hotel Machrihanish

10.0
Excellent See all 7 reviews

Perched a few kilometres from Machrihanish in the heart of Campbeltown, The Royal Hotel puts you within easy reach of one of Scotland's standout links experiences, Machrihanish Dunes. This is proper West Coast golf country, where the courses are raw, the scenery is dramatic and a post-round dram is never far away.

The Royal blends old-world Scottish elegance with the modern comforts you'd expect from a quality base. If you want to play Machrihanish while staying in the thick of Campbeltown's harbour-side buzz, pubs and local character, this is your spot. You're not stuck out on a remote resort, you're in a working town with proper life to it, yet the golf is right on your doorstep.

Food and drink is a big part of the appeal. The Harbourview Grille is the main dining room, serving steak and local seafood alongside a strong selection of wines, single malts and draught beers. It's a popular choice in Kintyre for a post-golf dinner. For something more relaxed, The Black Sheep Pub is a lively spot for a pint and a bite, and it's popular with both visitors and locals.

The hotel runs a shuttle service to The Ugadale Hotel and Cottages, Kintyre Club Restaurant, Serenity Spa, The Old Clubhouse Pub and Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club, so you can explore the wider Machrihanish area without needing a car. Beyond golf, the Mull of Kintyre's beaches, coastal walks, sea tours and historic sites are all within easy striking distance.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want an authentic Scottish links experience based in a characterful harbour town rather than an isolated resort, with quality dining, local pubs and easy access to Machrihanish Dunes.

Who is it best for?
Groups and couples seeking a proper West Coast golf adventure with genuine local flavour, strong food and drink options, and the flexibility to explore Kintyre's dramatic coastline between rounds.

Accommodation at The Royal Hotel Machrihanish

The Royal Hotel has 23 well-appointed guest rooms across two categories, giving you a comfortable base for a Campbeltown golf break. All rooms include complimentary WiFi, an HD TV and a modern bathroom, with classic fittings that suit the building's traditional character.

Classic Rooms are ideal if you want to stay central and keep things simple. Many offer excellent views across Campbeltown Harbour, with the stone piers and waterfront walkways right outside. It's a great option for golfers who plan to be out on the course all day and want a comfortable room to come back to.

Superior Rooms offer more space, with larger living areas that work well for couples who want a bit more comfort, or for groups who like room to spread out between rounds.

On-site, you've got two strong options for eating and drinking. The Harbourview Grille is the hotel's main restaurant, smart but relaxed, with a menu built around hearty favourites and local produce, including steak and seafood. The drinks list leans into what you want in this part of Scotland too, with a good choice of wines, single malts and a good range of draught beers. It's the kind of place where you can settle in for a proper post-golf dinner without feeling like you're in a stuffy hotel dining room.

Downstairs, The Black Sheep Pub is a livelier alternative and a handy place to wind down after golf. Expect a more casual atmosphere, solid pub food and plenty of local chat at the bar. You can still eat well here, the food is pub-style but done properly, but the atmosphere is more about pints, banter and unwinding after 18 holes in the wind.

If you're staying in town but planning to make the most of the wider Machrihanish Dunes facilities, the hotel's shuttle service is a real bonus. It can take you to The Ugadale Hotel and Cottages, Kintyre Club Restaurant, Serenity Spa, The Old Clubhouse Pub and Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club, so you can enjoy the area without needing a car. It means you get the best of both worlds, town life and golf access, without the logistical headache.

Away from golf, Campbeltown and the wider Mull of Kintyre offer plenty to fill a day off. Beach walks, coastal hikes, sea tours around the peninsula and a surprising number of historic sites are all within a short drive. This is rugged, beautiful Scotland, the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people travel halfway round the world to play links golf here.

If you're planning a Machrihanish Dunes trip, The Royal is a strong option for golfers who want town life, good food and easy access to the links.

My stay at the Royal Hotel exceeded expectations. I had asked for a room with plenty of floor space and the room I was allocated and that of my travelling companion were super. Spacious, nicely furnished with everything I needed. Very comfortable bed and super big bath with nice Arran toiletries and a nice separate shower
