FERNDOWN GOLF CLUB

Location: Golf Links Road, Ferndown, Dorset, 10 miles North of central Bournemouth  BH22 8BU

Ferndown's golfing landscape, set in the heart of the Dorset countryside, was where golfing legend and BBC commentator Peter Alliss learned the game, under the watchful eye of his father Percy who was the club's head professional. Nowadays, Ferndown has a tremendous championship course and a thoroughly entertaining nine-hole layout.

Championship Course
The Championship Course was founded in 1921, when the inaugurating fixture included the legendary Harry Vardon. The course however was conceived in theory by three-time Open Champion Harold Hilton in 1912, but in the intervening period there were insufficient funds for maintenance. Measuring 6,452 yards at its fullest, Ferndown's Championship was included in the 2002 publication of Golf Monthly's top 100 British courses, and the heathland track is now a staple in a good Bournemouth tour.

Presidents Course
The nine-hole Presidents Course has two distinct sets of tees, allowing it to be played as an 18-hole par 71. It adds welcome variety during a visit to Ferndown, and is a relatively easy walk, ideal for learners or those who just fancy a pleasant and sociable round.
