Documentation from a local boy named James Melville indicates that golf has been played over the Montrose links since 1562, and perhaps before, underlining that this is certainly one of the world's oldest and most historic golfing venues. The layout has changed periodically during the intervening time, but parts of the championship course have been played for over 350 years!

Broomfield Course / Medal Course
The Broomfield Course is the secondary course at Royal Montrose, but its par 66 layout is still a thoroughly entertaining challenge. However, it is the spectacular Medal Course that hogs the Montrose limelight. This traditional links layout, bordered by banks of yellow-blooming gorse, is among the finest in Angus.
The Medal Course has been chosen to host many of the most prestigious national events, including the Scottish Boys Championships, as well as being used for final qualifying when the Open is staged at Carnoustie.
The majestic Medal Course is links golf as it was originally meant to be; unfussy and natural, the course, like its character, is dictated by the indigenous land and the elements which affect it. Royal Montrose is a traditional gem that is well worth visiting as part of a visit to the lovely coastline of Angus.
