LAHINCH GOLF CLUB
In 1892, the Black Watch Regiment, whose hardy souls were stationed nearby, came across this wilderness of dunes, and being good Scotsmen they instantly realised that this godsend was meant to host a golf course.
Following Alexander Shaw's initial layout, Old Tom Morris was commissioned to elaborate, but he deemed the land so perfect for golf that all he did was identify the tees and greens. Shortly before he created the phenomenal Cypress Point on California's Monterrey Peninsula, the esteemed Dr. Alistair Mackenzie tinkered with Lahinch, and became absolutely infatuated with the land.
Given the remarkable names that have left their fingerprints on Lahinch, it come as little surprise that it is now regarded as one of the purest and best tests of links golf anywhere. The course is testament to the terrific landscape, with each hole winding its way between the spectacular dunes, on which the local goats roam unattended. The subtle greens are perfectly true, adding to the absolutely unforgettable golfing experience that can be enjoyed at Lahinch.
The neighbouring Castle Course may be smaller than the original layout, but it is similarly enjoyable, and shares the same terrific turf that Lahinch is so famous for.
