Sand Martins Golf Club, tucked into Berkshire’s countryside within a short drive of Reading, is a unique golfing venue. The club opened in 1993, and since then it has garnered huge acclaim for its high quality, but highly unusual layout.
The course reaches 6,212 yards from the championship markers, and its par 70 target is a pretty stern test, yet it is the huge disparity in style between the two nines which makes Sand Martins really individual; the outward half skirts lakes and water hazards in a classic parkland fashion, while the back nine is best characterised as an ‘inland links’.
On the closing stretch golfers must negotiate deep, revetted bunkers and tall rough, traits that are normally associated with seaside golf. This remarkable character makes Sand Martins a unique golfing experience, and one that is a delightful part of a Berkshire golf tour.
