It was at Panmure in 1953 that the legendary Ben Hogan made his rigorous preparations for victory at Carnoustie in his only Open Championship appearance. He spent two weeks familiarising himself with the local turf, the same turf that keen golfers flock to Panmure for today.

A regular choice for Open final qualifying, Hogan fell in love with Panmure, and was reportedly particularly impressed with the positioning of a devilish pot-bunker in front of the sixth green. The members appreciated his praise so much that the trap has been known as ‘Hogan's Bunker' ever since.
