Formby Golf Club is home to a superb course that is frequently selected to host top amateur tournaments, the next being the 2009 Amateur Championship. The course itself is an intriguing blend of woodland and links, and while it may not be a traditional seaside layout, the sandy turf is certainly reminiscent.

Recent developments have seen the maximum length extended to over 7,000 yards, and with the constant threat of the indigenous heather, there is no doubting Formby's formidable challenge. The original 1884 design has seen alterations from revered names like Willie Park, James Braid, Hawtree, Steel and Pennick, some of the most prominent individuals in the history of British golf architecture, and with this pedigree it is easy to understand why Formby is held in such high regard.

When the wind blows hard, the firm and fast greens are difficult to find, and the lengthy par-3s are some of the most challenging in the local area. The superb history of the club itself, and the exceptionally mature golf course make it one of the premier stops on the Southport tour.

Visitors to Formby will be following in some famous footsteps; among the list of past champions is Jose Maria Olazabal, who defeated his fellow Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie in the final of the 1984 Amateur Championship.
