Though the club was founded in 1890, the course at Churston Golf Club in modern times is the result of the 1924 design by Harry S. Colt. Arguably the finest English designer of his generation, Colt mapped out a fascinating layout at Churston, which is well worth including in a golf tour of this part of Devon.

Churston, whose current president is former snooker World Champion Ray Reardon, is an unorthodox test; the 6,208 course devised by Colt has many short par 4s, but they are extremely tricky. These give way, however, to two colossal long holes, measuring 557 and 516 yards respectively.
This is not typical of the era in which the course was designed, but Churston remains today a challenging proposition, especially with a standard scratch of 70. Wonderful views of Brixham Harbour and the Devon hills are the icing on the cake at this charming club, all within a few minutes of Torquay.
