The 138th Open Golf Championship will run from 16th-19th July and will be the event's fourth visit to the Ayrshire gem. The challenging Ailsa course was the venue in 1977 for the famous ‘Duel in the Sun’. In brilliant sunshine, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson went head-to-head and blow-for blow over the final two days, with Watson eventually finishing a shot clear of his rival – and 11 shots ahead of the rest of the field.

The Open is the jewel in the crown of the United States Golf Association's events, and is the second oldest event in the American golfing calendar. In 2009, the U.S. Open will see defending champion Tiger Woods lead the field to Bethpage State Park to do battle on the world-renowned Black course.
