Golf International Barrière La Baule is a major factor in the consistently large volume of travellers arriving at La Baule year after year. While the non-golfers lounge on the famous sandy beach, keen players will enjoy the 45-hole golfing complex.
Diane Course
The Diane Barrière-Desseigne is the resort's premier championship course, built around a massive lake that is a striking focal point. The course reaches 6,888 yards from the back markers, and is a parkland layout that presents a considerable test even to highly skilled players. The wide fairways are forgiving, but the testing greens are closely guarded by strategically positioned bunkers, making accuracy an invaluable asset.
Lucien Course
The second course at Golf International Barrière La Baule is named after the resort's founder, Lucien Barrière. It is marginally shorter than its neighbour, at 6,622 yards, but is by no means inferior. Winding through the landscape's impressive oak and chestnut trees, the course is best viewed as two distinct halves; the first nine offers up some birdie chances, but the closing stretch is characterised by narrower fairways, and is punctuated by a number of treacherous water hazards.
The golfing options don't end there; the resort is home to an excellent 9-hole executive course, and has recently unveiled its Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf, where you can receive the best instruction of utilise the cutting edge facilities to help sharpen your skills.
The beachfront Hermitage is widely regarded as La Baule's best hotel, and dominates the promenade, with great views of the sea and the pine tree-lined streets of the popular resort town.
Guests will find 92 bedrooms and 15 suites, including the famous Presidential Suite, all of which are decorated and furnished in an elegant, luxurious fashion.
With its location close to the heart of the resort, the Hermitage Barrière is extremely convenient for access to all the action, as well as La Baule's excellent golf complex, making it a stand-out choice for a golf holiday in the Western Loire.
If strolling directly on to the famous beach is not enough, the Hermitage Barrière has a delightful outdoor swimming pool, and a terrace for lounging in the sunshine, while inside there is a well-equipped fitness complex. The centre includes another swimming pool, a sauna, Turkish bath, gym and massage treatment rooms. The resort area that surrounds the hotel offers an endless list of activities; water sports including sailing and windsurfing, horse riding, hiking and cycling are popular, while La Baule's tennis club is among the country's most comprehensive, with 24 clay courts among the total of 29.
La Baule is best known for its beach, whose amazing 12 kilometres make it the longest in Europe, and now the beautiful bay is an extremely popular holiday destination. The medieval town of Guerande is a good alternative to the busy resort of La Baule itself, but together they provide a wealth of activities, as well as a fantastic selection of restaurants and bars.
Look out for the par-3s around Diane Barrière-Desseigne - they are long and difficult, and can quickly make a dent in your score.
Les Evens Piano Bar is an exquisite setting - relax with a luscious cocktail and enjoy the fantastic ambience.
La Terrasse is an elegant dining room overlooking the beautiful private gardens, and serves excellent cuisine from both the buffet and a la carte menus.
