PORTMARNOCK HOTEL & GOLF LINKS 4*

Location: Portmarnock, Co. Dublin

Bernhard Langer was blessed with a remarkable piece of land on which to build what is now a classic links golf course. While it may be part of a golf resort, the layout is a genuine links, and with its proximity to Dublin, it is a fantastic place for a golf break.

Both visiting professionals and amateurs will thoroughly enjoy the test at Portmarnock, where the traditional challenges of seaside golf are combined with the rigours of the contemporary game.

Langer has been quick to deflect attention, instead choosing to praise the natural canvas: "There are very few locations in Europe which could have allowed me the opportunity and landscape to design such a classical championship links."

The hotel at Portmarnock, set amidst its own 200-acre estate, was once called St Marnock's House and served as the private home to the Jameson family, now so famous for the Irish whisky that they export worldwide.

The luxury hotel now in its place retains the sense of charm and history, and fully justifies its position skirting the coast. With the recent addition of the new €40 wing, the accommodation options have been further enhanced.

Whichever type of en-suite bedroom a visitor chooses, it is likely that it will feature views of either the sea or golf course, and all offer that charming mix of traditional Irish hospitality and the comforts of a top modern hotel.

In addition, superb cuisine can be enjoyed at the hotel, and the extremely luxurious Health Spa offers excellent activities for those not keen for the links.

Oceana Spa offers guests an intimate, personal retreat that serves to rejuvenate the skin, relax the body and revitalize the mind. The facilities include wellness therapy in the three purpose-built treatment rooms, sauna, nail bar, hair salon and gym.

Adventurous guests can venture to the nearby fishing village of Malahide, where there are numerous superb restaurants, which take advantage of the fine local catch. There are also some great local pubs and bars.

Exquisite creations are on the menu at Osborne's Restaurant, which has been awarded an AA Rosette.

Relaxed dining and comfortable drinking are on offer in both The Cocktail Bar and The Jameson Bar.
