Set around the fringes of the resort, Penina has three separate golf courses, which together make up the legacy of Sir Henry Cotton's time at the fantastic Algarve destination.
Championship Course
Opened in 1966 and designed by Sir Henry Cotton, Penina's Championship Course was the first golf course built in the Algarve. The Championship course has been host to the Portuguese Open eleven times, and is also a regular stop for the European Seniors Tour.
Originally built on rice paddies, the 6,869 yard course is by and large quite flat but is set amongst mature trees and shrubs, with each of the fairways lined with impressive woodland. As a result of the mature setting of the golf course, accurate shot making is required to score well on the par-73 Championship course.
Academy Course
The nine hole par-35 Academy course sits close to the Championship Course and provides golfers the ideal opportunity to hone their skills. Previously named the North Course, it takes advantage of a lake to provide an interesting and satisfying round. It has all of the same characteristics of the Championship course, with tree lined fairways that require accuracy above all else.
Resort Course
In addition to the Championship and Academy golf courses, the Penina Resort also offers the Resort Course. This 9-hole par-30 "Executive" course features 18 tees and makes full use of a number of lakes and sand hazards making it an enjoyable course that tests the skills of all abilities.

Penina not only boasts three terrific golf courses, designed by Sir Henry Cotton - it is also one of the most established 5* resorts not only in the Algarve, but in the whole of Europe.
Penina's outstanding hotel offers guests a choice of bedrooms, all of which are decorated and furnished in the traditional Portuguese style, with warm earth tones throughout. All the bedrooms are equipped with the requisite amenities, including satellite television and full air-conditioning, while a daily turn-down is just one part of the 5* service that every guest will receive.
The all-encompassing Penina resort also has outstanding facilities for leisure and business travellers, which helps to explain why it is firmly established among the premier destinations for a golf holiday in Portugal.
Penina's excellent tennis academy has 6 tennis courts where you can take part in lessons and clinics with the resident professionals, while the FIFA certified football pitch has attracted teams of the caliber of Chelsea. Activities include circuit training, mountain biking and archery, while during the summer months the Beach Club is the place to try water sports such as wind-surfing, water-skiing and sailing. Back at the resort you will find a sauna, outdoor swimming pool, sun terrace, games room and a well-equipped gym, as well as a dedicated kids club called the Penguin Village. In addition to the health and beauty spa, it is clear that Penina has a lot more to offer than just golf!
Penina's nearest towns are Portimão and and Alvor, both of which are traditional Portuguese coastal towns. Portimão is a quaint little village, where you can experience the quintessential charm of the Western Algarve, as well as restaurants, bars, and a casino. The town of Lagos is only 7 miles away, where you can experience the terrific architecture that results from the town's rich history, as well as some of the Algarve's best seafood restaurants.
The Championship's short 13th hole is ranked in the world's top 500 holes, with water guarding the front of the green.
Penina itself has five excellent restaurants - try fine Italian in L'Arlecchino, or traditional Portuguese classics in the lovely Sagres dining room, while the Grill Restaurant is a more informal option.
The Spikes Bar and Henry Cotton's are both great golfer's watering holes, while the Monchique Cocktail Bar is a bit more refined, serving freshly mixed drinks in elegant surroundings.
