The jewel in the crown of the brand new Campo Real resort is Donald Steel's fantastic golf course, laid out over the spectacular undulating terrain around the estate. Steel was challenged to create his course with the minimum impact on the indigenous species of animal and plant life, and produce a layout that is as challenging as it is beautiful.
Campo Real opens and closes with long par-5s, and wedged in between are stunning holes carved through and around the vast valleys that make the landscape so memorable.
Measuring 6,671 yards, the course is not the longest, but sound strategy and accurate placement are vital, while the severely sloping greens make putting tricky at the best of times. Steel's golfing portfolio is admirable; his past projects include golf courses at St Andrews, Vila Sol, and Turnberry's mighty Ailsa, and he is said to be extremely proud of his latest Portuguese creation.
