Surrounding the hotel and clubhouse, Almenara has 27 holes that were designed by Dave Thomas, the man responsible for many great golfing projects, most notably The Belfry. The three loops are called Los Alcornoques, Los Pinos and Los Lagos, and together they offer three different par-72 combinations, providing welcome variety.
The gently undulating fairways meander through the truly stunning landscape around the lakes, and are bordered by pine, cork and oak trees. Set in the higher area of Sotogrande, the course is less than 500 metres from the legendary Valderrama golf course, host of the Ryder Cup and Volvo Masters.
Almenara is a fantastic resort course, providing a genuine challenge for highly skilled players, but Thomas' considerate design and the multitude of tee boxes ensure that the average golfer will not be overwhelmed.
Located in the heart of Sotogrande, Almenara is a high quality hotel that guarantees luxury accommodation in a beautiful setting. The hotel has been built in the traditional Andalucian style, displaying the classic terracotta colours for which the region is known.
There are 148 guest bedrooms, 12 of which can be converted into spacious suites for a special occasion. All rooms benefit from a private terrace that provides unparalleled views over the golf course, the Mediterranean and the perfectly manicured gardens, while inside the décor and furnishings are simple yet elegant.
Throughout the hotel, guests will enjoy the refined style, warm atmosphere and personal service that make Almenara such a special destination for a golf holiday.
The Elysium Spa is an oasis of relaxation, where water and light pervade throughout. The Hydrothermal room has a heated swimming pool with invigorating jets, a jacuzzi, hydro-massage tub, Finnish sauna, steam bath, and a Turkish Hammam and ice immersion bath to invigorate the body. There are ten purpose-built treatment rooms offering the latest in health and beauty therapy including specific golfer treatments, while the complex also has a state-of-the-art gym and an aerobic studio where scheduled classes like yoga, pilates and spinning take place. In the local area there is also a prestigious equestrian centre and an extensive racquet sports facility, while the coastline is a mecca for fishing and water sports enthusiasts.
The town of Sotogrande has a number of excellent bars and restaurants, while the local area is famous for its stretches of sandy beaches, where there are endless possibilities for water sports enthusiasts.
A good supply of golf balls is recommended around Almenara, particularly on the Los Lagos loop, which, as its name suggests, has a lot of water!
Inside the hotel are two excellent restaurants: Gaia offers fine dining in a formal candlelit setting, and while Veinteeocho is aimed at golfers, all will love its fantastic outdoor terrace.
The Pentegrama Bar is the perfect place to take advantage of Almenara's extensive wine list.
Down at the stunning Sotogrande Marina, Café Del Mar is an institution, famed for its fresh fish and spit roasts.
