Algarve Golf Holiday Review

Pestana CarvoeiroJust returned from a 7 night golf holiday at the Pestana Carvoeiro Resort and 2 nights at the Formosa Park Hotel in Portugal. The downs were the mis directions to the Pestana resort from the internet and the apartment at Pestana was not air conditioned. The positives at Pestana were that we played four really good courses, Gramacho, Vale da Pinta, Alto Golf (the toughest) and Silves and whilst not the longest courses on the Algarve they were all interesting and challenging. The breakfasts provided at Pestana were by far the best I have experienced in Europe with proper bacon and fried eggs being served by the delightful Fatima.

Pinheiros AltosThe second part of our algarve golf holiday was spent at Formosa Park which was a superb destination. The course attached is called Pinheiros Altos which was a superb challenge with plenty of water hazards. There are 27 holes at Pinheiros and are all of a decent standard. We were quite a mixed bag of golfers and all had a decent game. If you are a little wayward off the tee you will need a few balls as the water has a funny way of attracting your Titleist’s to it! While there we also played at the fabulous San Lorenzo, it’s hard to put into words how hood this golf course is. Having played over 70 courses in Europe San Lorenzo is amongst the best.

San LorenzoThe course at San Lorenzo is very well established and meanders its way through natural Portuguese flora and fauna as well as dramatic holes by the sea. The first nine is very picturesque with several holes featuring shots over water hazards as well as very tight tee-shots and fast running fairways. The back nine is a little more hilly with accuracy off the tee key to scoring well, it is however the 18th which takes all the plaudits and rightfully so. Off the back tees a 260 yard + carry is required over a large lake with only a small 30 yard landing area to put the ball into, from this landing area you are then presented with another shot over water to a small green which slopes towards a very uninviting lake! All in all this is a superb finishing hole to what is a superb golf course in the algarve.

Will most definitely be returning to both resorts, just hope I can get as good a deal next year as this!

Have travelled far and wide to be able to contribute to the 19th hole blog. Often referred to as one of the most boring people in golf due to my facts and figures about different destinations!
