The UAE is fast becoming one of THE go to places in the world for those in search of top class golf courses, near guaranteed good weather and luxurious accommodation options that boast world class restaurants and outstanding amenities and facilities and the stops on the Troon Golf Trail tick all of these boxes.

Abu Dhabi Golf Club

You may have seen this place while watching early season European Tour coverage as it plays host to the HSBC Abu Dhabi Golf Championships and if you have you’ll know that the golf on offer here is straight from the top drawer. What you might not know is that the golf club is home not just 18 but 27 championship holes of golf that include all of the features typically associated with desert golf.

The quality of the Championship Course at Abu Dhabi Golf Club is unquestioned with it playing host to the big hitters from the European Tour at the start of each season. This year we saw Robert Rock hold of Tiger Woods to claim victory.

Gently undulating fairways meander their way through pockets of palms, ornamental trees and no less than seven treacherous salt water lakes which, needless to say, places an emphasis on accuracy both from the tee and with approach shots to the well protected greens.

The fun doesn’t stop on the 18th green though as the iconic Falcon Clubhouse is a great place to relax after a long day on the fairways…you may just have to blow the froth of a few beers here as well!

Saadiyat Beach

If the Abu Dhabi Golf Club is the premier golfing experience to be had in Abu Dhabi then Gary Player’s Saadiyat Beach is not far behind! Located just off the Abu Dhabi coast, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club boasts an amazing course that, in its short existence, has become one of the most sought after in the whole of the Middle East.

Saadiyat Beach boasts an endless procession of beautiful beachfront holes.

Saadiyat is the Middle East’s first beachfront golf course and as such it offers not only a fantastic test of golf but stunning views from start to finish. The Gulf’s glittering blue waters, bordered by stretches of pristine white sand make this a truly awesome place to play golf. Each hole has its own distinct character and although the course is a stern examination of a players skill from the back tees, it was designed by one of the greatest ever golfer after all, several additional tee positions enable golfers of all abilities to enjoy this desert jewel. Personalised bag tags, lockers and a real ‘Member for the Day’ experience make the place all the more memorable and a must on any golf tour of Abu Dhabi.

The Els Club

From one South African golf master to another, the Els Club was designed by, yes you guessed it, Ernie Els, a.k.a the Big Easy…one thing this course is not! The Champion Golfer of the year for 2012 (Els won this year’s Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Anne’s) has always had a deft touch out of the sand which explains a lot on this stunning course. The Els Club opened in April 2008 to critical acclaim not only for design but also playability. The main feature here is undoubtedly the great swathes of sand that are dissected by impossibly lush fairways and a number of sizeable water hazards.

Be sure to practice your bunker play before you take on The Els Club on your next Dubai Golf Holiday!

Els had already experienced golf course design in his reworking of the famous West Course at Wentworth, and although his Dubai creation may be on another continent the same qualities of accuracy off the tee and a razor sharp short game are crucial to beating Old Man Par. Unlike many other desert courses in the UAE, the Els Club features dramatic undulations throughout the course which could be a link to The Big Easy’s love of links golf.

The Montgomerie Dubai

Before Els had made his mark on the golfing landscape in the Middle East another European Tour legend had done just that. Since winning a record 8 European Tour Order of Merit titles, 7 of which were on the trot, Colin Montgomerie has become one of the premier golf course architects in the game.

As with many of the golf clubs in the Middle East, the clubhouse at The Montgomerie Dubai is simply stunning.

The Montgomerie is the most spectacular of Dubai’s recent golfing additions, and is a true joy to behold. Colin Montgomerie has skilfully infused the resort style layout with the essence of his Scottish roots to produce a holiday course with a distinct links accent. The fairways are wide, but are also full of undulations, with gullies and mounds to ensure that a level stance is a rarity. Although it is essentially a ‘target golf’ style resort course, Montgomerie was keen to place a value on creativity, and as such imagination and guile will be rewarded.

The main challenge here though will be avoiding the enormous mass of water hazards on the course. In total they measure a staggering 49 acres…good luck!

The Track – Meydan Golf

As you may know the Dubai’s landscape changes quicker than Superman in a telephone box which is good news for us golfers as there seems to be a new course to play in the Arab State every week! The latest golfing creation in Dubai is The Track; aptly named for its location next to the Meydan Racecourse, home to thoroughbred racing and the world’s richest racing event, the Dubai World Cup.

Thanks to extensive floodlighting, sunset doesn’t signal the end of play at The Track.

The Track is a nine hole gem which measures 3,700 yards from the back tees…double that and you have a 7,400 yard 18 hole course which is plenty long enough to test even the longest hitters. However those with lees power from the tee need not be put off as The Track offers a number of tee positions to allow holiday makers to find their comfort zone and enjoy this fantastic course.

As with many courses in Dubai, The Track is impeccably maintained and thanks to floodlights on every fairway, golf can be enjoyed long into the night with the amazing Dubai Skyline acting as the perfect backdrop.
