The PGA Tour is in Arizona this week for the Accenture WGC World Matchplay Championship. The stage is the Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain resort and the cast is comprised of 64 of the world’s best golfers. For championship golf in Arizona, Dove Mountain really takes some beating but that is not to say it is the only course worth making your way to the Copper State for. Arizona is dominated by arid desert plains and stunning mountain ranges which make for some truly spectacular golf courses which, when combined with the fusion of the American ‘Old West’ and Mexican cultures, make for an incredible place to enjoy an American Golf Holiday.

Golf in Arizona, and Scottsdale in particular, is big business and as such there are options a plenty when it comes to courses, hotels and resorts so with all eyes in the golfing world fixed on Arizona this week we thought we’d give you some insider’s tips on where to stay and play during your next American Golf Holiday.

For Championship Golf:

Those in search of championship golf should look no further than the World Matchplay host, Dove Mountain. Located around 30 minutes from Tucson, the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain resort offers luxurious accommodation, an excellent spa and unbelievable dining options but the championship golf course is without doubt the most sizeable jewel in its crown.

The stunning desert layout that will test the best this week was conceived by none other than Jack Nicklaus whose well known design philosophy sees his courses offer plenty of room from the tee while getting tighter and better protected as the golfer gets closer to the green. The same is true at Dove Mountain.

The Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain plays host to the Accenture WGC World Matchplay and is one of the finest golfing experiences in the state.

Dove Mountain offers of three distinct nine-hole loops named the Saguaro, Tortolito and Wild Burro, each of which can be combined to form a par-72 layout that can stretch close to the 8,000 yard mark! Fear not though as tees for us run of the mill weekend warriors are far more manageable, offering up first class holiday golf.

Laid out beside a spectacular Saguaro cactus forest, Dove Mountain offers classic desert golf with forced carries over rugged desert waste areas, tranquil water hazards coming into play and well bunkered greens that are sure to be slick and quick thanks to Arizona’s excellent climate.

For Couples:

Head a couple of hours North from Dove Mountain towards Scottsdale and you will find the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, an all-encompassing venue whose outstanding facilities and unrivalled customer service ensure that it serves as a luxurious base for a golf holiday in Scottsdale.

The accommodation here is comprised of over 700 guest rooms, including 55 elegant suites and 32 charming casitas. Rooms are furnished with deluxe beds, luxurious linen and feature lavish en-suite bathrooms and endless amenities designed solely for your complete comfort.

The facilities on offer at the Westin Kierland Resort are top class, making this resort a haven for peace and relaxation.

Away from the golf course – Kierland Golf Club is next door to the resort – the Westin Kierland is superbly equipped for leisure and relaxation and is a great place for a holiday with a loved one. Agave, The Arizona Spa, boasts 21 treatment rooms where couples can enjoy heavenly therapies inspired by the natural benefits of the Agave Plant.  If treatments aren’t your thing, the fantastic outdoor pool, complete with 110-foot long water slide and a 900-foot flowing river down which you can float is great for relaxation as well. Additional pools and lounge areas make the resort a delightful place to spend time away from the golf course, recharging your batteries ahead of another long day on the fairways.

Dining has arguably taken centre stage at Westin Kierland and as such there are endless options including a couple of standout restaurants for couples looking to enjoy a romantic evening meal. Head to Deseo to sample stunning Nuevo Latino Cuisine and al fresco dining under the stars or to Dreamweaver’s Canyon where you can enjoy cocktails and appetizers from Waltz & Weiser Saloon which are served in the courtyard, under the Arizona sunset and in front of an open log fire.

For Nightlife:

If cutting loose and blowing off some steam in the evening is as important as the golf itself for you then a tour of Scottsdale is the way to go. The Hotel Indigo in Scottsdale is an excellent base from which to strike out towards a number of Arizona’s top class golf courses and its location near the heart of this famous golfing city means the sights and sounds of downtown Scottsdale are never too far way for golfing night owls.

With restaurants and bars a plenty there are nightlife options to suit all tastes in Scottsdale. Head to Mabels on Main if for elegant old school cool and a classy night out; Arizona 88 for a popular restaurant bar which serves excellent food and cocktails to the sound of live music or to the Coach House which is one of the oldest establishments in the city: a dive bar for the salt of the earth and those who just fancy a no traditional, no frills night out in Arizona.

The Coach House is a popular dive bar with locals and visitors alike; perfect for relaxed, no frills entertainment.

In terms of golf, gems such as Trilogy Golf Club, Foothills Golf Club and Rancho Manana are all within driving distance of the hotel and each boast all of the great course features inherent with desert golf. Rancho Manana is arguably the pick of the bunch with its stunning Sonoran Desert setting making it one of the most picturesque golf courses in Arizona State.

For Luxury:

When it comes to all out luxury and true 5* surroundings in Arizona, there are few that can top the Fairmont Scottsdale Resort, one of Arizona’s premier AAA Five Diamond Luxury Resort; a landmark of high class accommodation and leisure with outstanding facilities and unrivalled service.

All accommodations feature private terraces, deluxe oversized marble bathrooms, separate work and seating areas, and the finest amenities, all geared towards ensuring that the Fairmont Scottsdale is the best way to experience Arizona’s golfing paradise.

The Fairmont Scottsdale offers luxury throughout; a true 5* holiday destination.

In addition to the excellent accommodation options, the Fairmont Scottsdale offers exemplary dining, with no less than four award winning restaurants. La Hacienda for example, is a gourmet dining room that has received 4 Diamonds from AAA. Inspired by the flavours of Old Colonial Mexico, this is a great place to enjoy a sophisticated evening meal. For something a little less formal but equally impressive head to The Grill which is the region’s premier steakhouse. Here you can enjoy dry-aged beef which is unimaginably tender.

No stone goes unturned here, with your every need catered for throughout your stay and with the enormous Willow Stream Spa on-site and the famed TPC Scottsdale golf course next door, you will never be short of fun and relaxation.

For Authenticity:

Decorated in a charming and comfortable style that truly encapsulates the rich history and culture of this part of America, the Wigwam Resort offers a truly authentic and unique Arizona experience.

Three 18 hole courses – Wigwam is the only resort in Arizona that can boast 54 holes of golf – will keep even the keenest golfers busy throughout their stay and we can assure it’s not quantity over quality here. Two of the courses were designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior which, when you consider his past projects including the likes of Spyglass Hill, Hazeltine National and the No. 4 & 5 Courses at Pinehurst, is a reassuring fact. The third course on the resort, The Heritage, offers a test of golf more suited to the casual golfer.

For a truly authentic Arizona experience, the Wigwam Resort really fits the bill.

In the resort’s casitas and suites, modern contemporary style meets Old Western influences, giving you a constant reminder of exactly where you are in the world and that’s not where the authenticity ends.

At The Wigwam’s restaurants meals are prepared using the finest locally sourced ingredients. The resort employs a “farm-to-table” approach which ensures fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as locally produced meats, cheeses, wines and other delicacies are all that hits your palate. The ingredients just can’t get any more local than when they’re picked from the resort’s very own Farmer’s Market and organic Chef’s Garden!

The Wigwam Resort also boasts excellent sport and leisure facilities so your time away from the golf course can be as action packed as you wish and with natural treasures like the White Tank Mountains nearby, exploring the stunning Arizona landscape is also an option.

Wherever you choose to go in Arizona you will be assured quality both on and off the course and thanks to the state’s great wealth of golfing options, there is something for everyone.
