Coordinating a round of golf into your annual family trip or weekend away with the better half can be a problematic experience.

So to help, each month we’ll team up with Spabreaks.com to feature a venue that offers something special for the non-golfer in your travelling party – while still allowing you to pack your clubs.

This week we take a look at the luxurious Luton Hoo Hotel in Bedfordshire.

Few places are as special when it comes to weekend getaways as Luton Hoo, whether you prefer golf, spa, a walk in the grounds, giving a food coma your best shot, or having a go at a bit of everything.  So while at Spabreaks.com we could happily wax lyrical about it for the next few days if you gave us the opportunity, here is everything you need to know for a seriously decadent spa break …

Getting there … Despite its extensive grounds and rural vistas, Luton Hoo is conveniently close to the M1, and less than four miles from Luton Airport Parkway train station, so it is phenomenally easy to get to while still having the air of somewhere a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The 1,065 acre grounds lend themselves to relaxation and enjoyment.

When to go … Without sounding totally non-committal, frankly any time of the year is a good time to visit. The hotel is set amongst 50 acres of parkland peppered with 300 year old chestnut trees, and the River Lee snaking through it, so a walk around the grounds is an absolute must and as a result balmy summer evenings are always going to be the natural preference.  The spa is also in a separate building to the main hotel (although there is also spa accommodation) adding another reason to visit in spring or summer.  That said, the effect will not be lost on you at any time of the year, and when the weather is less than idyllic a hearty stroll in the drizzle is only enhanced by heading in for a stint in the pool and heroically sampling as much as possible in the restaurant.

Let your cares bubble away in Luton Hoo’s huge Hydrotherapy Pool which boasts panoramic views over the picturesque woodland.

What to do … The hotel is surrounded by a golf course designed by the famed Capability Brown, and there are plenty of other outdoor activities available as well including cycle hire, tennis, clay pigeon shooting, or if you fancy travelling a little further the hotel is within easy reach of the Roman town of St Albans, Hatfield House, and Whipsnade Zoo.

Who to take … This is a destination that is unerringly romantic so definitely take your other half.  Between the golf, the spa, the food and the setting, it really does have ‘happy couple’ written all over it and if it is a trip that comes in gift format complete with a spa treatment, then it practically spells ‘brownie points’ (note to self:  Valentine’s Day is just a month away).

Between the golf, spa, food and the setting, Luton Hoo makes for the perfect romantic getaway.

Favourite Feature … It’s all about decadence, so make sure you do it properly.  The spa has created its own product brand in conjunction with Circaroma, so not to have a treatment would be verging on rude.  Follow that with afternoon tea or dinner, because food here is out of this world, and you will be one very happy bunny.

Top Tips

– Have a Gin and Tonic in the bar outside the Wernher Restaurant, there isn’t a better place to enjoy a drink after a fantastic meal.

– We have said it once, but feel it really can’t be reiterated too often – go for a walk around the grounds … just take your wellies if you happen to be going this week.
