Golf in Portugal

By May 9, 2011No Comments

GramachoWe once again had a most enjoyable golf break in Portugal despite the weather not being kind to us on the last two golf days. A big thank you to Your Golf Travel!

Firstly I was most impressed by the Dom Joao II hotel in terms of accommodation. Many of our group had rooms with a sea view which was an added bonus. The staff were most pleasant and helpful, which as you know is an important part of any golf holiday.

My only gripe was that the breakfast was not on the same level as other four star establishments I have stayed in.  I only had one evening meal there and again I was not particularly impressed by the quality in comparison with other like graded hotels in the Algarve. Nevertheless I would still recommend the hotel because of its location adjacent to the village and the fact that it is good value for money.

The sister courses Gramacho and Vale Da Pinta were in tremendous condition. Both courses are suited for golfers of all abilities and especially for a group like ours where many of the players have a high handicap. Lower handicap players are likely to shoot a good score if they can steer clear of the bunkers that provide the main defence for both courses. The hole guides on the scorecards make a big difference because they give you a much better idea of where to aim and what club to take. We all know how frustrating it can be to play some courses for the first time!

Penina is a difficult challenge and was beyond the capability of many of our group however it was our choice to play it. We played this course without the aid of a course planner and on reflection should have asked for one before we started. Maybe it would be a nice touch to provide these automatically though? The service of the Penina staff was outstanding. Several of us came in during a thunderstorm and we had our footwear dried out and polished with a smile!

The food at all three clubhouses was of good quality and as expected drinks were quite expensive at Penina. All the courses we visited were well signposted and easily accessible.

I have always been impressed by the quality of prompt, courteous, professional and efficient service provided by Your Golf Travel and will certainly be booking through you in the future. I will be hoping to organise another trip around Easter next year and am leaning towards flying into Faro and playing some of the Spanish courses next to the Portuguese border. I’m sure you will be able to help me with this!
